The Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) is seeking a full-time Special Projects Coordinator (Grant Writer/Team Grant Management). Reporting to the MAFES Director, this position is responsible for building and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, coordinating large team granting efforts, developing and editing assigned grant proposals, and engaging with internal and external grant award administrators to advance large granting efforts on behalf of MAFES. The position may also include some post-award grant management, reporting, and within-program coordination of education and outreach activities related to research grant outcomes and deliverables. Collaborative or team granting activities may also be engaged with other entities affiliated with the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine, and other research programs across the Mississippi State University campus.
Provides guidance to faculty and administrative staff in crafting polished proposals, interpretation of funding agency regulations and requirements, providing reference documentation, including forms and other required materials (i.e. Grants.gov, Fastlane), in order to oversee the submission of proposals and post-award reporting. This position may also oversee aspects of internal MAFES grant award programs, and be responsible for creating reports associated with grant-intensive activity across the organization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: writing, proofreading and editing research grant proposals, and managing the proposal development process. Candidates should have demonstrated success in scientific writing, an enthusiasm for learning about new areas in research, and an interest in supporting MAFES research activity.
Education: Minimum of a Master's degree is required in a relevant discipline to agriculture and life sciences. However, both Bachelor's degree and graduate degree (M.S. and/or Ph.D.) must be in a relevant discipline to agriculture and the life sciences.
Experience: Three (3) years of related experience in grant writing and management of contracts and grants, as well as experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Substitutions: Indicated minimum education is required. When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional education toward the experience requirement at a rate of one (1) year of relevant education per year of required experience.
Demonstrated experience in project management, budgeting, grant writing, and project reporting. Experience interacting with funding agencies such as the USDA NIFA and FAS, NSF, NIH, FFAR, and others. Experience in team facilitation, leadership, and coordination. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in diverse communities, including those in academia, industry, government, and general audiences. Experience in food systems or research programming (domestic and international) in agriculture and natural resources.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate should be able to guide and facilitate faculty and staff in the development and preparation of research proposals.
Assist the Director/Associate Director of MAFES in facilitating and supporting the research through identification of funding opportunities as appropriate to departmental researchers.
Ability to organize and coordinate workload with multiple deadlines.
Ability to provide direct training to new and existing faculty and staff in the area of grant writing.
Ability to work diplomatically and effectively with MAFES Director's office Grants and Contracts Specialists, Principal Investigators and departmental staff.
Ability to work efficiently under pressing deadlines, high volume workflow and stressful situations.
Highly skilled with computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. No or very limited physical effort required. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
