Job Duties:
The Manager of the ECU Language Academy reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs. The position is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the university's intensive English program, the ECU Language Academy. The Manager of ECULA is responsible for assisting ECULA students from the recruiting stage all the way through matriculation into ECU academic programs. The position also works with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs to develop and implement strategies to provide language support to ECU students.
25% Administers the academic aspects of the program, including:
- establishing and overseeing of curriculum that meets professional standards;
- evaluating staff performance;
- registering students for ECULA classes;
- ensuring accurate academic placement of students depending on current English proficiency;
- maintaining national accreditation of ECULA program.
25% Administers the logistical aspects of the program, including:
- hiring and scheduling staff;
- scheduling classrooms;
- ensuring program compliance with federal, state and University regulations and processes;
- overseeing the procurement of books and classroom materials;
- working with Global Affairs staff to invoice students and collect payments;
- liaising with departments on campus including student health services, parking services, student recreation center, OneCard office, etc. to ensure ECULA students receive necessary services.
25% Assists with recruiting, enrollment, retention, and matriculation of ECULA students, including:
- assisting Director of International Enrollment and Engagement with ongoing recruiting efforts;
- contributing to print/digital marketing, communication plans, website, and social media;
- interacting with prospective students throughout their recruitment, particularly related to academic aspects of the ECULA program;
- promoting and informing ECULA students about ECU academic programs;
- assisting students applying for ECU academic degree programs;
- liaising with academic departments to ensure smooth academic transition for ECULA students.
20% Coordinates resources on campus to help ECU students who need language support, including:
- liaising with the University Writing Center staff to prepare them to provide academic writing support for ESL students;
- coordinating with English Department to train graduate TESOL students on working with ESL students;
- coordinating university efforts to provide tutoring resources for international students.
5% Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs.

Minimum Education/Experience:
1. Master's degree in Linguistics, TESOL, English, or Modern Languages
2. At least three years of university-level ESL teaching experience
3. Demonstrated ability to coordinate with a broad range of campus units and organizations
4. Excellent proven oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated intercultural communication and collaboration skills and experience working cross-culturally
5. Demonstrated evidence of continual professional development

The Office of International Affairs in the Division of Academic Affairs coordinates all ECU student, community, faculty, and curricula-related international activities. (Among included activities are: education abroad administration; undergraduate international student admissions; international student advising and programming; international scholar services; administration of the ECU Language Academy, ECULA; administration of the ECU/Disney Hospitality Leadership Program; and coordination of ECU's internationalization efforts.) A comprehensive office for International Affairs is necessary to secure East Carolina University's position as a contemporary university addressing the concerns of a globally interdependent society.
