The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures (RLL) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Francophone Caribbean literatures and cultures to begin in the fall semester of 2023. We seek an exceptional scholar whose research and teaching focus on the Francophone Caribbean of any period. We welcome applicants working in areas including but not limited to transatlantic, diasporic, or black studies; a secondary specialization in another area of Francophone studies is welcome but not required.
RLL comprises a vibrant community of scholars whose research and teaching are at the forefront of advancing the humanities at the University. RLL colleagues collaborate with interdisciplinary programs such as Latin American Studies, Global Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film and Media Studies, as well as other departments and research centers across the University, to carry out innovative research and teaching projects. Our department houses the French Connexions cultural center and has created a dynamic new French curriculum with an enhanced focus on Medical and Digital Humanities in which students approach questions of current cultural relevance from a geographically and historically informed perspective. This new tenure-track position aligns with Washington Universityâ™s commitment to build a world-class research program on race and ethnicity. Moreover, the new colleague will be eligible for substantive research support from the Center for the Humanities and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The teaching load is two courses per semester:
Conduct and publish scholarly research.
Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
Advise and mentor a diverse student body.
Perform other duties assigned by the University.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. with a research focus on the Francophone Caribbean no later than June 30, 2023. We expect the successful candidate to teach and conduct scholarship in both French and English.
