The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in the School of Science and Engineering at Saint Louis University seeks a dynamic, collegial, collaborative, and creative individual for a tenure-track position in aerospace engineering. Applicants should have an affinity for teaching courses in the aerospace curriculum at undergraduate and graduate levels, and for developing a sponsored research program. The expectation is to hire at the rank of assistant professor; however, candidates with exceptional qualifications will be considered for appointment at higher ranks, including those with tenure.
We are seeking candidates at the intersection of aerospace engineering and digital technologies in the following areas of research:
Aerospace Structures - aeroelasticity, aerospace materials, space structures and structural dynamics
Thermofluids - combustion and novel propulsion systems, with an emphasis on aerospace applications
Geospatial Systems - sensors, platforms, calibration, analysis and applications
Space Systems - especially with applications in one of the above categories
Responsibilities:
Teaching - all faculty in the Department are expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They shall create inclusive, engaging teaching experiences to develop industry-ready, entrepreneurially minded, and socially conscious engineers. The teaching load will be scaled according to external research funding, with an emphasis on providing time for new faculty to develop their research portfolio. Assistance in developing coursework will be provided by the Department.
Generating sponsored research - expectations include significant effort towards developing and maintaining a robust externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs and other research personnel. Startup packages are available for qualified candidates, as is mentoring for proposal and collaborator development. The Department is interested in candidates who can collaborate on one or more of the campus-level research initiatives at SLU, including, but not limited to entrepreneurship, advanced manufacturing and/or the Taylor Geospatial Institute.
Student mentoring - Saint Louis University strives to educate the whole person, and thus an important component of faculty responsibilities is active engagement in undergraduate and graduate student mentoring.
Participate in Departmental and School service - while tenure-track faculty are primarily expected to develop their teaching and research portfolios, there are minimum service expectations to the Department and School.
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. in aerospace or mechanical engineering or a closely related field
Demonstrated excellence in research and scholarly activity, including peer reviewed journal and conference papers, grant writing, mentoring students, and developing an independent research agenda
Excellence in teaching as demonstrated through previous teaching and teaching preparation experiences
Desire to engage with SLUs mission-driven learning and outreach activities
 Preferred Qualifications:
Post-doctoral fellowship experience
Relevant teaching experience that promotes hands-on, experiential learning
Established record of interdisciplinary collaboration and impactful research work
Demonstrated ability and vision to collaborate and build a multidisciplinary initiative in pursuit of enhancing undergraduate and graduate education
