Research Specialist II, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Georgetown University Medical Center
Georgetown's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) seeks to prevent, treat and cure cancers by linking scientific discovery, expert and compassionate patient care, quality education and partnership with the community - guided by the principle of cura personalis - care for others. We seek to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer through innovative basic and clinical research, patient care, community education and outreach, and the training of cancer specialists for the future.
Job Overview
The Research Specialist II assists in the development, approval, and implementation of new Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) protocols for laboratory animal research, and conducts research activities related to scientific projects.
They are specifically engaged in animal model research, including planning and assisting with data collection, performing skilled technical procedures for animal model research, conducting data analysis, and presenting and disseminating research results in a viewer-friendly manner.
As a team member, they engage in collaborative projects with other researchers, including students, staff, and faculty; and manage the inventory of research animal colony, and maintain and update digital records.
They also ensure that research practices follow Georgetown's Environmental Health & Safety and IACUC standards, including maintenance of appropriate logs and forms, and prepare lab spaces for annual IACUC inspections.
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Specialist II works under general supervision of both the P.I. and an Assistant Professor.
The research duties have a significant influence on productivity of the environment in the laboratory and facilitate the timely and effective completion of projects involving animal models research.
Through their successful performance, they directly contribute to novel, cutting-edge research in areas of human health and clinical significance that align with the overall goals of the Laboratory and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Qualifications
B.S degree
3 to 5 years of related experience - preference for 6+ years of laboratory animal research
Experience in small animal handling, rodent surgery, animal tumor models, and methods for administering treatments to rodents
Preferred qualifications
Expert knowledge of murine syngeneic and xenograft tumor models
Experience managing rodent colony
Training and knowledge of specific rodent surgery techniques, including tumor implantation, survival surgery, rodent imaging, oral gavage, and administration of injectable agents
Experience with data management systems, such as Transnetyx colony management
