Assistant Director for Labor and Staff Relations

If so, we invite you to join our team as the Assistant Director for Staff and Labor Relations.
The Opportunity
In this highly visible role, with the Sr. Director you will provide strategic direction and leadership for the university's labor relations function. You will be responsible for serving as the University's primary relationship manager to various unions, including the Building Trades Council, the Cornell Police Union, the International Union of Operating Engineers, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America, and Teamsters, Local 317. You will also participate in labor relations activities, including negotiations, grievances, and arbitrations, and consult and advise HR leadership across campus on matters related to union contracts. You will partner with the Senior Director and HR leaders across campus in on-going employee relations matters for all University employees, regardless of representation status. In your role, you will have the
opportunity to develop and implement compliance-related trainings, including labor relations and employee relations. You will participate in university programs and committees as needed and have the opportunity to work as a University representative in community activities.
What we need
To be successful in this role, you will need a Bachelor's degree and five to seven years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and related experience. You should have strong conceptual, analytical, and systems thinking abilities with organizational change (or industrial & organizational psychology), project management, and planning knowledge and skills. You must possess a strong knowledge of labor relations, effective communication and presentation skills, an ability to navigate conflict and ambiguity, and an eagerness to learn. You will have demonstrated the ability to establish constructive relationships with union members and union leaders. Additionally, you should be able to influence and partner with internal senior leadership teams across the organization.
