The position plays a significant role in developing content and crafting messaging that positions Brandeis in favorable light, supports the universityâ™s strategic objectives and marketing initiatives, and generates positive local, national and international media coverage.Â
The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to write strong, clear and concise copy quickly, for a variety of formats including feature and news stories, print advertising, media relations, social media, and internal communications among others. The candidate should also be able to identify ways to communicate a single message across multiple platforms. Must have experience in journalism, or in working effectively and directly with traditional and digital media reporters, producers, editors, photographers and film crews. Will have primary responsibility for working with student media. Must be a strategic thinker and understand marketing concepts. While the ability to work in a team is key, the successful candidate will be a self-starting and enthusiastic strategist and content generator able to juggle and complete multiple projects simultaneously.
This position requires familiarity with or ability to learn web content management systems, and digital media content and measurement tools. Must be able to relate to, and work well with, faculty, administrators, staff and students. The focus of their work in generating external media opportunities will be on identifying newsworthy stories and pitching them directly to reporters. Focus of their work as a content creator will involve producing copy centered on students, research, campus events, and university news and initiatives for multiple platforms. Experience with social media best practices, accessibility best practices, photography, video production, and email marketing are a plus. Preference for a familiarity with higher education or other highly-matrixed complex organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
Generating ideas for and writing (or producing via multimedia) news, feature stories and marketing content centered on students, faculty, research, university events and initiatives, developed in partnership with senior communications personnel and campus partners. 55%
Writing press releases and, media advisories, and generating media pitches and monitoring media. 20%
Building newsletters, working with external content partners and updating digital platforms. 15%
Assisting with breaking news and responses to incoming queries, scheduling interviews and tracking Brandeisâ™ appearances in the media. 10%
Requirements:
Bachelors degree required.
5-8 years of relevant experience is required
Must be a fast and accurate writer and have proven media relations skills.
Must be able to understand complex and nuanced academic stories and translate them accurately into readable prose relevant to key audiences.
Must be comfortable and confident working with reporters on deadline and after normal office hours.
Must think strategically and be comfortable working across teams/platforms catering to different audiences.
Must be resourceful, attentive to detail, and willing to take lead on projects/initiatives inside the department, set goals, track success and make deadlines with minimal oversight.
