Northeastern University Library is hiring a Metadata Manager to join a great group of colleagues at the Northeastern University Library in Boston, MA.
Situated in the Resource & Discovery Services department, the Metadata Manager creates and manages metadata for licensed and purchased resources available from the library catalog, including print collections, serials, eBooks, ejournals, databases, and other material. With an emphasis on providing optimal discovery and access, they supervise all metadata activities in the Resource & Discovery Services department, including original and copy cataloging, batch-loading of vendor metadata records, and implementation of vendor- or community-provided indices and collections.

The Metadata Manager is responsible for hiring, training and evaluating staff in the Metadata Unit, for managing the priorities and day-to-day activities of the Unit, and for ensuring that the Unit runs efficiently and smoothly. They work closely with and are knowledgeable in the relevant systems used in the Department. They work collaboratively with staff in other Departments to test new software and troubleshoot issues with existing software. The Unit Manager also develops and maintains a broad and deep understanding of metadata and related technical services best practices. The successful candidate will identify and address metadata remediation needs, as well as the adoption of new or updated standards and vocabularies in support of the University Library's commitment to incorporating diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racist efforts into our daily work.
Qualifications
ALA-accredited master's degree in library science required.
At least 5 years demonstrated successful experience in increasingly responsible positions managing or supervising metadata services with demonstrated experience in cataloging electronic resources, in academic or research libraries.
Knowledge of library metadata standards, such as MARC, BIBFRAME, RDA and linked data.
Experience with library management software for cataloging and inventory control required. Experience with Ex Libris Alma software strongly preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of established and emerging national and international standards relating to metadata. Some experience with cooperative programs, consortial initiatives, and operational workflow analyses desirable.
Advanced knowledge of identity management and authority work preferred.
Working knowledge of one or more high-level scripting languages and markup languages preferred (such as XML and Python).
Experience working with APIs , normalizing data, and scripting transformations of structured metadata preferred.
Knowledge of trends and issues in academic libraries, scholarly communications, higher education, publishing, preservation, and emerging technologies.
Ability to work internally and externally with a wide variety of individuals at all levels, a strong service orientation, and a demonstrated commitment to staff development and diversity in the workplace.
