UW Continuum College (UWC2) has outstanding opportunities for part-time instructors for the Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) Certificate in Geographic Information Systems. Two sections of this program, online and in-person, are being offered in the 2024-25 academic year, the instructional teams collaborate across both sections. In-person classes are taught on the UW Seattle Campus. Instructors are needed for the following courses in-person during the quarters indicated:
- GIS Data & Database Design - autumn quarter 2024 (Monday evenings, 6-9 pm)
- GIS Project Planning & Implementation - winter quarter 2025(Wednesday evenings 6-9 pm)
- GIS in Practice in the Pacific Northwest - spring quarter 2025 (Wednesday evenings 6-9 pm)
Instructors serve a key role in certificate programs, engaging with students, serving as subject matter experts, presenting learning content, and assessing whether learners have achieved course competencies. PCE students consistently say that the instructor is the single most important element of their course.
The pay range for these instructor positions is $1,150 - 1,250 per CEU* per course, commensurate with experience and qualifications. *Continuing Education Credits (CEU) information for individual courses may be found on our website. Each course in the GIS program is 3 CEUs.
Professional and Continuing Education Instructors...
- Teach to a set curriculum plan with clear learning outcomes and competencies - these will align across both sections (online/in-person) of the program and in collaboration with both sets of instructors
- Prepare a course syllabus in advance of the course start date (templates provided)
- Ensure that lesson plans and presentation materials for the full course are relevant and current
- Teach all class sessions at the scheduled time and in association with a second instructor for each course
- Respond to student inquiries and provide feedback on student assignments in a timely manner
- Coordinate with other instructors in the certificate program, to ensure curriculum continuity across courses
- Adapt instructional techniques based on feedback from students and the Program Manager, and implement sound pedagogical practices
- Complete instructor onboarding, relevant learning technology training, and other training as required
- Observe FERPA, HIPAA, and other privacy laws and policies.
- Participate in 1-2 instructor meetings and information sessions per year

UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructors are Academic Staff, not faculty. This is a part-time, temporary position.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in earth science, geography, environmental, or social sciences
- Knowledge of field mapping with Esri products
- Must be well versed in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
- Ability to troubleshoot coordinate system and projection issues with various GIS data formats
- Ability to supervise and train students on day-to-day software workflows
- Good IT skills including data organization and management, and troubleshooting capabilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally, in writing and in presentations
- Legal authorization to work and receive compensation in the United States. These positions are not eligible for visa sponsorship
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS (some are specific to individual courses)
- 5 years of experience using Esri products for managing GIS data and with vector and raster GIS analysis
- Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience with adult learners
- Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience in the field of GIS applications
- Experience designing and creating data bases for GIS analysis and map creation
- Knowledge of Relational Database Management Systems for use of storing data, editing data and accessing data for GIS applications and analysis
- Familiarity with editing GIS data in an Enterprise environment using versioning
- Experience with GIS analysis automation including ArcGIS Pro ModelBuilder and Python
- Experience applying standard IT project management practices to GIS projects
- Familiarity with the agile, waterfall and other software development lifecycles in the context of delivering GIS solutions
- Familiarity with using Computer Aided Design files in GIS software
