Position Summary

The Department of English is seeking a full-time Instructor or Assistant Professor to teach filmmaking courses in the Film Studies Program. This is a fixed-term position. Course load is three courses per semester and will include sections of the programs gateway production course, FLM260: Introduction to Digital Film and Emergent Media, and FLM334: Introduction to Screenwriting. The teaching assignment is also expected to include at least one advanced course in the candidate's area of specialization. An ideal candidate will complement the strengths of current production faculty and demonstrate compatibility with a liberal-arts curriculum that integrates filmmaking, the critical study of cinema, and creative writing across genres.

A college program housed in the Department of English, the Film Studies Program offers an undergraduate major and minor and a graduate certificate emphasizing theory and history, as well as two undergraduate production minors in Fiction Filmmaking and Documentary Production. The program has overlapping strengths in investigating cinema in relation to issues of global cinemas, aesthetics and technology, and independent filmmaking. The Department of English is a dynamic inclusive community that encourages intellectual and cultural diversity, prepares students for a range of careers that require global cultural knowledge, and is an integral part of the College of Arts & Letters and Michigan State University's international engagement. The department is deeply committed to initiatives such as the MUSE Scholars Program, which mentors graduate students in English from underrepresented groups, and the Womxn of Color Initiative, which organizes events for Womxn of Color and their allies working toward social and racial justice and equity.
