Completion of this 24-month residency program ensures that the resident will graduate with stellar clinical, research, project management, and leadership skills and prepares them to be a well-rounded pharmacy administrator.
The PGY1 residency year is designed to develop patient-focused inpatient pharmacy practitioners who are able to care for diverse populations. Residents will complete rotations in adult medicine, infectious diseases, cardiology, the medical intensive care unit (MICU), emergency medicine, and drug information/policy. Additional elective rotations are offered in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU), the progressive respiratory care unit (PRCU) / neurotrauma ICU, transitions of care, or advanced experiences in any required rotation. Residents will be involved in several longitudinal experiences including drug information/policy, medication safety, precepting and education, practice management, staffing, and a residency research project.
The PGY2 residency year is designed to build off of the clinical skills and relationships the resident has built during their PGY1 experience in order to accomplish departmental, market-level, and national Ascension goals. Residents will complete rotations in pharmacy operations management, clinical pharmacy management, outpatient pharmacy management, recruitment/retention/and human resource management, state level Ascension Health leadership, hospital administration, and procurement/pharmacoeconomics. Additional elective rotations are offered in medication safety, informatics, drug use policy and education, pharmacy association management, and academia. The resident will be involved in several longitudinal experiences including pharmacy finance and revenue management, staffing, a residency research project, and serve as Chief Resident. Additional experiences during both the PGY1 and PGY2 year include preceptor development, involvement with University of Michigan and Ferris State University pharmacy students, and presentations at ASHP Midyear and the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference.
