The Grant Writer will play a central role in supporting the Department of Neurological Surgery's research mission by leading the development of high-quality, competitive grant proposals. This includes writing, editing, and coordinating submissions to a wide range of funding agencies. The position also involves identifying funding opportunities, collaborating with faculty on research aims and budgets, ensuring compliance with submission guidelines, and supporting post-award reporting.
This hybrid role requires strong scientific writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Science, Public Health, or a related field.
At least 2-3 years of experience in grant writing, research administration, or a related field, preferably in an academic or healthcare setting.
Proven ability to write, edit, and submit competitive grant proposals, ensuring compliance with funding agency requirements.
Strong research skills to identify and evaluate potential funding opportunities from federal, state, and private sources.
Knowledge of grant submission and compliance processes, including experience with online grant portals (e.g., NIH eRA Commons, Grants.gov, NSF FastLane).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, persuasive narratives.
Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple deadlines and work collaboratively with faculty and research teams.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with reference management software (e.g., EndNote, Mendeley).
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in research administration (e.g., CRA - Certified Research Administrator) or grant writing (e.g., GPC - Grant Professional Certified).
Master's degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., Communications, Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Research Administration).
Five or more years of experience in grant writing, preferably within an academic medical center or research-intensive institution.
Experience securing funding from major agencies such as NIH, NSF, DoD, or private foundations.
Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and facilitating large, collaborative grant applications.
Familiarity with research administration, including budget development, compliance regulations, and post-award reporting.
Knowledge of the field of neurological surgery, neuroscience, or biomedical research.
Understanding of university-sponsored research policies, financial regulations, and compliance frameworks.

Department Overview
The Department of Neurological Surgery is comprised of 14 surgeons, 4 physicians, and 10 research faculty, supported by a team of approximately 100 individuals across staff, student, volunteer, and non-faculty academic roles within the School of Medicine. Our faculty are actively engaged in a broad spectrum of research activities, spanning basic, translational, and clinical science. The department is nationally recognized, currently ranked #17 in NIH funding among Neurological Surgery departments (source: Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research).
This position will work in close partnership with the Department Chair, Vice Chair of Research, and Chief Administrative Officer to drive the implementation of key strategic initiatives focused on expanding our research enterprise and diversifying our funding portfolio.

Work Environment
UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
