The candidate will teach an introductory environmental science course that is a required course in the Environmental Sciences and Studies (ENVS) program at Brown University in the spring semester of 2026. The course, ENVS 0490: Environmental Science in a Changing World, is cross-listed with Biology and has been taught yearly for the past 15 years to an audience of 100-150 students from all years and all concentrations (majors). The course content covers topics such as climate change, population growth, agriculture, water, pollution, the energy transition, biodiversity, and extinction. It focuses on building scientific thinking skills and data literacy with narratives that connect societal problems with applicable solutions. The successful candidate will have access to existing course materials, opportunities to update and/or enhance course materials in areas relevant to their teaching and research interests, and the support of full-time faculty mentors during their semester in residence.
Education and Experience
PhD in a relevant field and 1 to 2 years of undergraduate teaching experience, including graduate-level teaching assistantships.
Job Competencies
Lead introductory lectures on environmental science following a progression of topics established in the existing syllabus.
Apply modern pedagogical techniques such as the use of digital learning platforms (e.g., Canvas).
Support learning by students from a diverse array of personal and academic backgrounds (including non-majors, ESL students, and students with learning differences).
Evaluate learning outcomes using multimodal assessment tools such as exams, online discussions, homework assignments.
