For all candidates, salary and entry rank will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and qualifications.
Requirements for appointment for Clinical Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors (non-tenure track) can be found in the Guidelines for Appointment and Promotion of Non-tenure Track Clinical Faculty in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery: https://provost.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/ptu-criteria-small-animal-medicine-surgery.pdf.
The major responsibilities for this position are, along with one other faculty clinician, to teach and provide surgical and medical instruction to fourth-year veterinary students at the Athens Area Humane Society (AAHS) in Athens, Georgia. The relationship between UGA and AAHS was established in 2021, and the successful candidate is expected to help continue the collaborative program while maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. The successful candidate will contribute to expanding a service that provides a robust clinical experience for students by emphasizing patient care and population health; providing clinical training in spay/neuter techniques, basic surgery, and dentistry; and demonstrating the role of a veterinarian in shelter practice. Additional responsibilities include teaching shelter medicine to preclinical veterinary students, supporting community outreach programs, and participating in continuing education to local and regional groups. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collegially are required. The candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities related to the College of Veterinary Medicine's clinical service, research, and teaching missions. Such scholarly activity includes the opportunity for collaboration with colleagues within the Department, College, and University. Proportionate assignments for teaching, service, and scholarly activity will be based on the candidate's interests in conjunction with the mission of the shelter medicine program and the Department.
The successful candidate will be assigned to and work out of the Athens Area Humane Society, a newly renovated 15,000 square foot facility on Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens. Approximately 7500 square feet of the facility are dedicated to medical operations, including three exam rooms, a surgical suite with 6 heated tables, an anesthesia prep/recovery room, a dentistry suite, and a digital radiography suite. The facility is located approximately eight miles from the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
A full-time UGA-funded veterinary technician supports the UGA shelter medicine veterinarian(s) and students. The successful candidate must work collaboratively with AAHS veterinarians and staff in a shared clinical space. AAHS employs two veterinarians, one licensed veterinary technician, and six veterinary assistants. Annually, AAHS celebrates approximately 1600 adoptions, and through collaborative agreements with other shelters and organizations, completes approximately 9000 surgeries.
