Description The Department of Art and Architecture at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sculpture and Three-Dimensional Design to begin August 1, 2025. This is a full-time, one-year position with a teaching load of five to six courses per year. The appointment has the possibility for renewal contingent on successful annual review and ongoing curricular needs. Teaching responsibilities include introductory sculpture and three-dimensional design courses, electives in the candidate's area(s) of expertise, and management of sculpture studios and equipment.
The Department of Art and Architecture offers a BA in studio art and a non-professional BA in architectural studies. Both degrees feature a curricular emphasis on conceptual thinking and the design process as a method of inquiry. Advanced studios, Honors Projects, and Independent Studies in studio art and architectural studies offer opportunities for students to explore specific interests in sculpture and design.
The salary range for this position is $52,915-$63,499.
Qualifications We welcome candidates from all sculpture and 3D design backgrounds with a commitment to student-centered practices and an equitable and inclusive classroom. While the area of expertise is open, candidates whose creative practices and teaching represent a wide array of sculpture and 3D design practices are especially encouraged to apply. The successful applicant must demonstrate skill in developing and delivering course content that encourages creative problem solving, critical thinking, active learning, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Required qualifications:
an MFA, M.ARCH or equivalent degree in sculpture or a 3D design or applied arts field, completed by June 2025. The area of graduate training may be in a variety of areas including all sculpture and 3D design fields.
teaching experience at the college level.
a proven record of professional activity, demonstrated by an exhibition record or equivalent work in the presentation of design work.
Desired qualifications:
two years of teaching experience at the college level.
an ability to teach related courses in additional fields such as drawing, installation art, performance art, digital design, industrial design, furniture design, etc.
an ability to teach non-western traditions of sculpture and 3D design.
a proficiency in 3D studio practices such as ceramics, welding, casting, joinery, etc.
