Position Overview: The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Student Wellness Education will support the mission of the Office of Student Wellness Education (SWELL) by assisting with health education initiatives, outreach programming, and student engagement efforts. This position is ideal for a graduate student pursuing a degree in public health, higher education, social work, student affairs, or a related field. The GA will serve in the on-call rotation for the entire campus to respond to crisis situations or other problematic events, if needed. For graduate students in public health, social work, and community health education, this position provides practical experience in health promotion, prevention strategies, and community-based education. This role also provides valuable hands-on experience for those interested in a career in student affairs and higher education, offering opportunities to develop skills in student engagement, program development, peer education, and campus-wide health and wellness initiatives.
Key Responsibilities: Program Development & Implementation
Assist in planning, coordinating, and assessing health promotion programs focused on topics such as alcohol and other drugs, mental well-being, sexual health, nutrition, and sleep.
Support the development and facilitation of workshops, presentations, and outreach activities for students.
Collaborate with campus partners to integrate health promotion strategies into student life initiatives. Student Engagement & Peer Education
Assist in training, mentoring, and supporting undergraduate peer educators or student volunteers.
Help coordinate peer education events, including scheduling, logistics, and promotional efforts.
Foster student leadership in health advocacy efforts on campus. Marketing & Outreach
Develop and distribute educational materials, social media content, and marketing campaigns to promote health initiatives.
Maintain the office's digital presence to ensure accessible health resources for students.
Represent the Health Promotion Office at campus events, resource fairs, and orientation programs. Assessment & Administration
Assist in collecting and analyzing program evaluation data to measure the effectiveness of health promotion efforts.
Research best practices in collegiate health promotion and provide recommendations for program improvements.
Support administrative tasks, such as responding to student inquiries, managing program logistics, and assisting with grant-related activities. Professional Development & Career Preparation This position offers direct experience in public health and higher education related fields, preparing graduate students for careers in:
Student Engagement & Leadership Development - Working with peer educators and campus organizations.
Wellness & Health Promotion - Designing and implementing campus-wide wellness initiatives.
Public Health & Community Health Education - Applying health behavior theories to real-world programming.
Social Work & Case Management - Supporting student wellness and addressing social determinants of health.
Higher Education Administration - Gaining experience in program planning, assessment, and institutional collaborations. The GA will also have the opportunity to:
Receive mentorship from professional staff in student affairs, health promotion, and public health.
Network with campus professionals and student leaders.
Gain experience presenting programs and facilitating student discussions.
Develop transferable skills in event planning, advising, marketing, and assessment. Qualifications:
Enrolled in a graduate program of: Higher Education, Student Affairs, Public Health, School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Health Communications or another closely related field preferred.
Passion for student health and wellness with a commitment to health, belonging and inclusion.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience in public speaking or facilitation preferred.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic campus environment.
Experience with event planning, marketing, or peer education is a plus.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canva, and social media platforms is preferred.
