The Tow Center for Digital Journalism at the Columbia Journalism School is seeking a researcher
to lead the Center?s inquiry into developing a project that builds a national map of the local
journalism landscape. This scholar will contribute to white papers, scholarly research and
events/workshops. This appointment is for six months, and may be renewable depending on
both performance and funding.
The requirements for the Senior Staff Associate I are: A deep and demonstrable knowledge of the
local news landscape with their own published works, strong qualitative and quantitative
research skills, and a thorough understanding of the role technology plays in the transformation
of journalism. Qualifications for a successful candidate would ideally be a researcher with
relevant experience in project management, publishing and fundraising.
The successful candidate will be comfortable with the pressure of delivering work on tight
deadlines and evolving priorities in a professional manner. They must have excellent judgment
and be able to work in a fast paced environment. The Senior Staff Associate I will report to the
Director of the Tow Center and work in close consultation with the Assistant Director and
Research Director on research outputs, including:
· Identifying and cultivating relationships with relevant research partners
· Supporting conversations with representatives from companies, research networks,
etc. about the project and its findings
· Producing briefing memos and presentations materials on research
· Presenting new ideas for research topics and methods
· Monitoring and amplifying the impact of the research program; helping to identify
opportunities and gaps to raise the profile of the project and the Center as a whole
· Ensuring the project is meeting deliverable's in a timely manner; additional tasks as
needed
· Any other duties needed to support the research process
Minimum Degree Required:
Bachelor's degree
Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience with journalism research and project management. An active
member in the digital journalism community, or the journalism research community.
Demonstrated ability to produce research that is timely, rigorous, authoritative, contains
original ideas and analysis, and relevant to the journalism industry.
Demonstrated ability to write and edit well for the Tow Centers' community: working
journalists, newsroom managers and leaders, academic researchers, journalism students and
educators.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree in journalism, communications, media, technology, or a closely related field
preferred.
