JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning, the JK-12 Arts Department Chair is responsible for the management and overall excellence of the theatre, studio, and musical arts programs and teaches two middle or upper school classes. The Chair serves as an instructional leader with an understanding of curriculum, technology integration, best practice pedagogy, and child and adolescent development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The JK-12 Arts Department Chair:
Builds strong relationships with students, faculty, and parents so that there is shared understanding of and commitment to the forward momentum of the Arts Department and MICDS overall.
Helps establish the vision for the department while responding to emerging best practices and research.
Manages a reduced teaching load.
Supervises, manages, and oversees the development of the department’s teachers.
Assists with the recruitment and selection of new faculty.
Assists with teacher evaluation and professional development.
Serves on various academic leadership groups and committees.
Oversees curriculum development, mapping, and alignment.
Leads the department in research-informed continuous improvement and innovation.
Coordinates the departments use of performance spaces in collaboration with the technology and operations departments.
Coordinates the departments use of digital technology, with an emphasis on emerging technologies.
Oversees textbook and teaching material selection and recommends library books, materials, and other learning media acquisitions.
Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure the communication of information that impacts department members and students.
Serves as a mentor to faculty in matters of classroom management, teaching methods and school procedures
Provides academic guidance to and placement for students.
Complies with all of the essential functions, job requirements, qualifications and duties of MICDS arts teachers.
Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the school’s discretion.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in subject matter. A master’s degree is preferred but not required
Minimum of five years of teaching experience
Experience working in a one-to-one laptop environment or equivalent experience with instructional technologies
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated leadership and management skills
Experience working and learning with children and adults
OTHER INFORMATION
A criminal history and background check is required and must be successfully completed prior to employment.
Employment may require work at a desk and/or a computer for extended periods.
Employment will require frequent work in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment and occasional work in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
