Position Summary: TheDepartment of History, Politics, and International Relations at Messiah University invites applications for a one-year lecturer position in History with expertise in Europe and the World.
Responsibilities: Teaching one advanced course each semester in European and/or world history, lower-level courses in area of specialty, and first-year interdisciplinary general education courses aligned with faculty area of interest. We are especially interested in candidates who could offer upper-division courses in subfields that explore Europe’s connections with other parts of the world within transnational/transoceanic, comparative, and global frameworks. Teaching load is 4-4.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in History required. Ability to teach European history within a global context. We seek faculty committed to undergraduate teaching and research in the context of a Christian liberal arts university.
The Program: The History program at Messiah offers majors in History, History with Social Studies Certification, and Public History. We encourage students to study the past from a range of historical periods and areas (U.S., Europe, Ancient Mediterranean, and South Asia) and varied historical approaches (historical methods, public history, digital history, and archaeology). We emphasize the cultivation of a breadth of historical learning along with liberal arts skills of research methods, critical thinking, and high-quality writing. The department offers minors in history, digital public humanities, and Classical, Medieval and Renaissance studies, as well as many enrichment opportunities, including: faith formation, interdisciplinary study, honors projects, faculty-student research, internships, study-abroad semesters, global and domestic cross-cultural courses, archaeological fieldwork, public humanities activities, digital projects, community engagement, and service-learning. As a program, we encourage the professional development of faculty as scholars, innovative teachers, caring mentors, adapters of new technologies, and community engagement. The Department: The Department of History, Politics, and International Relations includes seven full-time faculty and approximately 71 majors. Students are encouraged to think independently, engage in fruitful debate, and become citizens committed to service, social justice, and reconciliation. The department maintains strong collaborations across campus with the Center for Public Humanities, Teacher Education Program, Office of Diversity Affairs, and the Oakes Museum of Natural History, and off campus with the city of Harrisburg, county and state archives, community organizers, and regional schools. Our faculty works closely with students to provide a range of transferable skills that will allow them to access diverse opportunities for employment. Our graduates pursue employment and graduate school in a variety of fields, including history, public history, religious studies, journalism, communication, education, sociology, library science, business, law, computer science, data analytics, theology, among many others.

Compensation: Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience
