Information and Technology Services (ITS) at the University of Michigan has an exciting opportunity for a Network Engineer Intermediate.
In this position you will be a part of a team that designs In-Building (wired and WiFi) and Core networks. This team is in the midst of a multi-year project to replace the core and distribution layer of the network. At the same time, Colleges and Schools across the Ann Arbor campus will replace aging portions of their in-building networks. You will design and implement in-building networks across campus. This includes the distribution layer and access layer (wired and WiFi). You will have a solid knowledge of ethernet and Wi-Fi, switching and routing protocols, and associated equipment. You will report to the Network Planning Manager.

Work can either be on site or remote, but there may be times when on site work is necessary.
May require working during non-business hours and on weekends

Customer Projects
Provide primary engineering on the development, design, and implementation of wired and wireless networks. Collaborate with and gather technical requirements. In collaboration with team members, designs networks using established guidelines and customer requirements. Create the design, bill-of-material, project costs, drawings, documentation, and configuration specifications for implementations.
Prepare and publish detailed documents for completed network designs including RF design, wired network design, and associated CAD details.
Help develop implementation plans and timelines, provide status reports, and exchange relevant information with management and technical teams.
Technical Support
Provide technical consulting to project managers and customers to ensure network design and deployment strategies. Participate in strategic planning and setting of technical direction. Conduct research to support recommendations of new technologies and services.
Perform root-cause analysis of network infrastructure concerns by investigating problems, poor performance, and error conditions. Provide tier 3 problem escalation support for the campus network infrastructure.
Consult and coordinate activities with vendor support to troubleshoot and resolve product issues, bug fixes, and configuration discrepancies.
Develop test plans, perform testing, and produce written reports for new networking technologies under consideration.
Service Improvements
Collaborate with team members and Tier 2 and 3 teams to understand service improvement requests and opportunities.
Support service enhancement projects that involve resolution and quality improvements by identifying and quantifying service desk requirements, delineating the gaps between service desk requirements and the capabilities of existing technology and resources, and recommending improvements.
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field or equivalent combination of education, certification and experience
Two year's experience in a related role requiring timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, and working independently to assist customers in their use of computer and network hardware and software.
2 years experience with Wireless LAN design and implementation
2 years experience with LAN design and implementation
Experience developing a project from concept to implementation
Cisco network certification of the associate level or above (CCNA or CCNP Enterprise)
WiFi network certification, such as the CWNP (Certified Wireless Network Professional)
Experience with SNMP network management and network monitoring.
Experience in troubleshooting client card install and operation issues.
Experience with CAD software
