The faculty, students, and staff in the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry (BMC), as part of the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), are engaged in an array of research, teaching, and service activities to meet the needs of our world-class educational institution. The department is housed within the Hector Deluca Biochemical Sciences complex, a state-of-the-art research and instructional complex located on Henry Mall, and has a reputation for carrying out federally funded, high-level, competitive biomedical research.
A primary goal for this Post Award Accountant position is to support members of the BMC Department who are engaged in sponsored (externally funded) biomedical research and to provide consistent, insightful reporting related to the department's vibrant research portfolio. Working under the general supervision of and reporting to the Department Administrator, this individual provides support in purchasing, financial reporting and analysis, and recommendations to faculty, and is expected to continually seek out knowledge in related areas to facilitate accomplishment of assigned responsibilities. Furthermore, the Post Award Accountant is a key contributor to ensuring high-level professional support in preparing and submitting grant proposals and related reports to secure funding from outside agencies and organizations.
In addition to working collaboratively with the Department Administrator and department faculty, the Post Award Accountant works to implement the broad goals of the BMC department at UW-Madison. By supporting the faculty, students, and staff of the department in securing and managing funding of their research, this individual is pivotal in enabling the mission of the department.
Responsibilities:
Works directly with principal investigator and research staff to budget, monitor expenditures, and reconcile financial data for sponsored programs. May directly process and/or approve accounting transactions such as cost transfers, procurement, sub award management, and financial processing related to sponsored project management. May review and approve transactions on behalf of an intermediate unit or center.
30% Assists principal investigators with financial management of sponsored program budgets and directs day-to-day fiscal transactions
10% Prepares and processes financial reporting and/or invoicing information
10% Provides expertise and advice related to procurement and allowable charges
30% Reviews financial expenditures for accuracy on sponsored grants and contracts
10% Advises departments or researchers on appropriate post-award modifications.
5% Serves as subject matter experts to leadership, staff, and institutional stakeholders regarding sponsored programs accounting and financial operations, policies, and procedures
5% Audits and approves sub award invoices

Education:
Preferred Associate's Degree with an emphasis in business, finance, or accounting.
Qualifications:
-Minimum of 2 years experience in sponsored grant financial management, post award accounting and compliance in higher education, governmental or other highly regulated setting, required. -Experience interpreting and analyzing financial data and effectively communicate summarized results, required. -Experience with UW transactions and policies is strongly preferred. -Candidates should possess a high level of initiative and organization with the ability to be flexible, meet deadlines, communicate well, and work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders.
