Position Information: UC Riverside's Auxiliary Facilities Services is recruiting for an HVAC/R Mechanic. The full salary range for the HVAC/R Mechanic is $42.17 - $47.48 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
The HVAC/R Mechanic performs journey-level work related to the repair, maintenance, service, installation, modification, troubleshooting, inspection and monitoring of commercial/institutional heating, ventilating, air conditioning, air handler systems, and refrigeration equipment, along with associated plumbing, electrical, mechanical and control systems. Works with Direct Digital Control (DDC) energy management systems and various control systems including electronic, digital, analog, mechanical and pneumatic. Provides independent inspection and response to requests for repair or installation of campus equipment. Executes the preventative maintenance on all equipment and systems through changing belts, bearings and filters, washing indoor/outdoor coils and performing amp draws on motors to confirm proper operation. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed. Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed. Reviews and updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to updates and changes. Responds to emergency situations to mitigate and/or resolve immediate HVAC concerns or safety issues. Reviews and creates blueprints/drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns. Performs all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

HVAC/R Maintenance & Repair:
Performs layouts, installations, inspections, troubleshoots, maintains, modifies, and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning, air handling, and refrigeration systems/equipment, such as Direct Expansion (DX) units (packaged, split, and built-up), gas-fired furnaces, walk-in/reach in freezers/coolers, and growth chambers, including cascade systems.
Performs refrigeration system charging, evacuating, leak detection and recovery on refrigeration equipment. Maintains records of all refrigerant gas transfers as per Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) requirements.
Performs routine maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and calibration to ensure efficient operation of air handler systems and equipment related to supply, return and exhaust. Works with pumps (air, water and vacuum), strainers, and piping systems (steel, copper, brass, stainless steel, ABS and PVC).
Conducts water testing and treatment for water source heat pumps and associated systems (cooling towers, swimming pools and heating/cooling water closed loop systems).
Performs preventative maintenance and testing on all HVAC/R equipment according to manufacture and/or campus requirements.
Performs brazing and soldering, pipe bending, electrical wiring, plumbing, fabrication and general mechanical repair.
Collaborates with other skilled trades and Facilities Services team members to complete minor renovation projects and maintenance projects.
Maintains knowledge of building and safety codes, hazardous material handling and disposal.

Maintains working knowledge of the proper and safe usage of HVAC equipment and maintenance skilled trade. Keeps track of shop materials/parts.
Performs computer input within the work order system for recording of labor and materials used in work performed; maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance performed. Updates equipment and campus utility map documentation, specifications and drawings as needed.
Cleans truck/shop and maintains organization of materials and tools; performs routine maintenance or coordinates for repair or replacement of tools and equipment, as required. Accounts for shop parts/supplies inventory and reports supply needs to be restocked.
Consults with supervisor and/or lead for technical information, as needed. Interprets prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
Supports maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Adheres to the scheduling and completion of work assignments through the work order system. Maintains accurate work order records and completes paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Defines and describes materials, tools and/or equipment, work methods and task sequences.
