The Middle School/Upper School Computer Science teacher will teach courses in three general categories: coding and computer science, digital design, and physical computing /robotics. Additionally, they will serve as a student advisor for a group of students and assume other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Upper School.
Responsibilities:
Teach the following courses, with some variation possible depending on the successful candidate’s areas of expertise and personal interests:
Principles of Robotics (Middle School)
AP Computer Science Principles (Upper School)
Art with Circuits (Upper School)
Web Design (Upper School)
Physical Computing (Middle School)
Assist with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, such as:
Programming team
Subject Area Concentration diploma program—STEM
Middle School Robotics
Club opportunities: Drone/RC racing, E-Sports, VR Fitness
Plan, develop, and implement an engaging curriculum in collaboration with other members of the Computer Science Department.
Create a student-centered learning atmosphere that fosters critical thinking, inquisitive learning, and a positive classroom environment that encourages student participation and discussion.
Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
Stay informed about the latest developments in computer science education, as well as trends and innovations, and incorporate these into the program.
Collaborate with colleagues to develop inter-departmental and cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives, including collaborating with the middle and lower school divisions on curriculum and instruction where appropriate.
Actively support students, providing mentorship and academic guidance.
Assess and evaluate student performance through assignments, projects, and exams.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues regarding academic progress.
Maintain complete and accurate records of student attendance and progress.
Develop and implement policies and procedures for student use of materials and equipment.
Participate in faculty and professional meetings.
Seek opportunities for ongoing professional learning.
Adhere to MVA’s standards for faculty members regarding teaching, service, and scholarship as outlined in the MVA Employee Handbooks.
Skills and Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field
Proficiency in computer science curriculum creation and instruction.
High aptitude and interest in technology (hardware and software).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Outstanding interpersonal skills
Proven success working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, parents and community leaders
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a multitude of tasks by volume, urgency, etc.
Strong work ethic and high level of integrity
Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field
Experience in mobile app development, artificial intelligence, and/or engineering.
Experience in robotics and physical engineering, using these skills to bring real-world applications into computer science education.
Experience working in an independent boarding / day school
