Overview This position has been budgeted for $25.50 per hour and is non-negotiable.
The SDSU Research Foundation Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is the largest WIC agency in San Diego County, with approximately 80 employees providing a variety of nutrition services to over 26,000 participants monthly. The WIC program is a safety net program that aims to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care for residents of San Diego County.
Under the direction of the WIC Community Services Manager, the WIC Outreach Coordinator assists with education, training and development of outreach projects.
Responsibilities The WIC Outreach Coordinator is responsible for but not limited to:
Outreach Coordination 65%
Responsible for coordinating outreach activities including, but not limited to, trainings at medical offices, community agencies, Department of Health Services and Department of Social Services offices. Represent SDSU WIC at community collaboratives, County meetings and activities to bring awareness to the value of WIC. Build and maintain valued-partner relationships with healthcare providers, social service agencies and various community-based organizations. Develop and implement provider engagement strategies with medical providers to increase WIC participant recruitment, retention and re-engagement. Coordinates development of provider and community partner newsletters. Plan, implement and participate in community events to engage and recruit potential participants. Document and track agency outreach activities timely and accurately. Updates agency referral database. Coordinate, mail, and deliver WIC outreach materials to medical providers and community partners. Represents the WIC program in a clear and professional manner.
Training and Communication 25%
Strategize with WIC Community Services Manager on development of outreach campaigns and materials. Provides in-services and outreaches to groups and/or individuals and program promotion through print and digital media and advertising. Provides training to staff on various nutrition and social service resources available to WIC families to improve their health. Responsible for creating content in accordance with any CDPH WIC guidelines on social media for agency including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook and other relevant sites. Responsible for overseeing the content of the agency website and ensure that it attains professional and clear content. Assists management with quality assurance
and quality improvement measures to ensure best customer service practices.
Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 10%
Coordinates special projects such as Worksite Wellness activities for the agency including the Worksite Wellness blog. Assists with WIC eligibility by gathering applicant information and scheduling enrollment appointments and other direct service duties as needed.
Qualifications Knowledge & Abilities
Knowledge of the WIC program and how to bring awareness to various community based organizations and social services programs to increase participation engagement
Knowledge of adult centered learning theories as applied to nutrition and health instructional materials
Knowledge of the wide variety of policies and procedures integral to the California WIC program
Knowledge of the WIC Program and community nutrition with emphasis on maternal, infant and child needs
Knowledge of breast feeding benefits, physiology and procedures
Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition, health promotion and disease prevention
Knowledge and competency using word processing applications, spreadsheets and internet applications
Knowledge of adult centered learning theories as applied to nutrition and health instructional materials
Ability to coordinate outreach activities and represent WIC at county meetings and community events
Ability to train staff on various nutrition and social service resources available to WIC families to improve their health.
Ability to develop outreach campaigns and materials via print and through social media platforms
Ability to deliver training and presentations to groups and individuals
Ability to refer community resources and programs to people in need of assistance
Ability to interact and communicate clearly and effectively in a professional manner, both orally and in writing
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of participant, employee and agency records
Ability to work well in a fast paced environment and to work with a multi-cultural staff and participant population
Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
Ability to travel throughout San Diego County and work at various WIC Offices and community partner locations
Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends
Ability to arrive to work on time, understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
Ability to relate well to others within the WIC project environment and interact effectively with coworkers
Ability to be a highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills

Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent
Previous experience working with ethnically and culturally diverse individuals, communities and organizations
Preferred Qualificiations & Special Skills
Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Public Health or related field
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Certification as a WNA (WIC Nutrition Assistant)
