The Cinema and Media Studies Program at Wellesley College invites applications for a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow. The appointment will be for two years, beginning in fall 2025.
We seek scholars who engage in research about Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the field of media studies. Possible areas of specialization may include AI and labor in creative industries and news media, the environmental impact of digital culture and AI, the use of AI for surveillance and policing, including data collection and automation, AI and wearable technologies, algorithmic culture, digital infrastructures, platform studies, AI governance, or the role of AI in education. We welcome a diverse set of approaches that put the political, economic and technical functions of AI in dialogue with established areas and methods of cinema and media studies.
In addition to developing their own research and participating in the academic life of the program, the Fellow will be expected to teach two courses per year, one in the area of their expertise, as well as a section of our introductory course to media and screen cultures. We seek a fellow who is committed to undergraduate education with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.
Candidates must have a PhD in cinema and media studies, communication studies, or a related field. To be considered for the position, the degree must have been received in the last 5 years. Required materials for submission are a CV, Cover Letter that addresses working in a small liberal arts college community, Two Letters of Recommendation, a Statement of Research (2-3 pages), and two sample syllabi, one for an introductory course to media studies, and one for an elective course about AI. For best consideration, please apply by March 7, 2025. This position is in a collective bargaining unit represented by Wellesley Organized Academic Workers – UAW (WOAW-UAW).
