Curative is seeking a Vice President, Actuarial & Underwriting to lead Curative’s large group commercial and level funded Health Insurance Actuarial and Underwriting Department. This role is in Austin, TX and will be a key contributor as Curative expands and grows. As the Vice President, Actuarial & Underwriting at Curative, you will play a leadership role of operating at the forefront of overseeing and implementing the various models, practices and strategies to identify, assess, and mitigate risks as well as optimize pricing and provide a competitive advantage in the market through data analysis. You will be key in working with the actuarial and sales team to optimize models and use market intelligence to modify pricing models and proposals. Responsibilities:
Oversees the actuarial and underwriting functions. Develops and implements actuarial strategies and plans to support the organization’s overall goals and objectives.
Accountable for creating and managing Curative’s strategic actuarial and underwriting philosophy and plan in close collaboration and coordination with the Curative Leadership Team
Oversees the operation of the department to ensure a high standard of quality, productivity and compliance with all established standards and procedures.
Oversee data analysis of key indicators and analysis of a group’s experience, industry, location, and demographics.
Assess risk characteristics to determine acceptability for new and renewal business.
Work with Claims and Data team to understand adverse development, emerging issues, concerns, effective strategies that mitigate exposures or lessons learned and incorporate into models and procedures. Utilize statistical and analytical techniques to analyze the data and identify trends and patterns. Maintains a good understanding of standard market conditions.
Apply technical expertise to established actuarial and underwriting guidelines, standards and regulatory requirements. Recommend improvements and refinements to existing policies and standards that support development of existing and new products.
Ensure actuarial and underwriting policies are maintained and updated to reflect changing rules and procedures.
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal brokers. Provides timely and effective assistance and communication with all departments, brokers and customers.
Provide leadership and direction to actuarial and underwriting staff inclusive of the company’s mission, culture and technical underwriting.
Manages staffing levels through effective monitoring of work standards.
Manages budget responsibilities for department.
Develops and oversees a peer review program to continuously review all aspects of the Department to ensure compliance with all established standards and procedures.
Perform all management activities including performance management, staff development, and training.
Performs other duties as assigned by the President.
Functional Experiences, Skills and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, computer science or related degree.
Five or more years in health insurance management.
Five or more years experience overseeing the actuarial function or related experience in a fast-paced environment.
Five or more years’ experience in Health Insurance Large Group Underwriting and/or Product Management, data analysis and/or data management a plus.
Experience at or working with major insurance brokerage firms (Marsh, Gallagher, USI) preferred.
Proven leadership abilities to develop, direct and motivate employees and work across teams.
Demonstrated presentation and communication skills (verbal and written).
Sound decision making, analysis and judgment skills.
