Virginia Tech, a comprehensive land-grant institution in Blacksburg, VA, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next director for ADA and accessibility services. This is an on- site leadership role. The director for ADA and accessibility services reports directly to the associate vice president for equity and accessibility. The director:
• Serves as the institutional compliance officer for the university to ensure Virginia Tech complies with Title I and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and other federal, state, and local laws related to individuals with disabilities as applicable. • Serves as the ADA coordinator and the section 504 coordinator for the university. • Provides leadership, management, oversight, and implementation of comprehensive ADA compliance and education programs within the university community. • Oversees matters related to Title I and Title II of the ADA. • Provides advisory oversight to the director for civil rights compliance, who has delegated authority to manage the university's ADA and section 504 grievance procedures. • Works closely with university senior management on developing, administering, and updating policies, procedures, practices, guidelines, and processes to assure compliance with the ADA.
The director operates with a fair amount of independence and serves as the campus expert for issues relating to the ADA.
The director provides supervision and leadership to six staff who impact ADA and accessibility services across the institution: • ADA accommodations and outreach specialists (2) • Campus ADA architect • 508 and digital accessibility officer • Accessibility developer • Office of Equity and Accessibility (OEA) case manager
The salary range is $135,000 to $145,000.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's degree in psychology, special education, rehabilitation, human resources, management, public administration or other related field of study or education and experience that equates to an advanced degree. • Strong professional experience working with the implementation of the ADA or section 504. • Extensive professional experience working with employees with disabilities. • Proficiency in analyzing and applying Title I and Title II of the ADA and other relevant federal and state ADA disability laws and regulations. • Demonstrated experience and expertise in implementing Title I workplace accommodations. • General knowledge of the ADA standards for accessible design. • Experience working with individuals with a broad range of disabilities. • Progressive experience in promoting disability access or accessibility with a specific emphasis on ADA compliance programs
Preferred qualifications:
• Juris Doctorate (JD) or related terminal degree. • Experience as an ADA coordinator with demonstrated experience leading disability compliance programs. • Experience with accessibility/barrier removal planning. • Experience with short-term and long-term project planning. • Knowledge of various alternative formats and/or assistive technologies that enable individuals with disabilities to communicate, participate, and perform essential functions and/or work-related tasks. • Professional ADA certification. • Demonstrated professional history in successful and progressively responsible administrative roles that include experience in strategic planning, program assessment and policy development. • Experience successfully leading professional staff who provide services to support compliance with the ADA. • Familiarity with disability support agencies and professional resources. • Experience working across a large, complex enterprise. • Experience implementing or overseeing section 504 compliance programs, preferably in a higher education setting. • Understanding of disability justice and its impact on civil rights programs.
