The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) seeks a dynamic, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as the Executive Director of Educational Design and Technology. The Executive Director will provide strategic vision and leadership to advance the school?s mission and deliver measurable outcomes reflecting the highest standards of excellence in online and distance education across our campuses in Washington, D.C., Bologna, Italy, and Nanjing, China. This individual will collaborate with the school leadership to manage the creation and delivery of online course content for a wide range of SAIS master?s and certificate programs. Leading a team of instructional designers and multimedia specialists in a fast-paced and innovative environment, the Executive Director will work closely with faculty to ensure the development of engaging, comprehensive, and cutting-edge online programs that meet the needs of both domestic and international students.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Executive Director will oversee the growth and implementation of SAIS?s online education programs by leveraging expertise in educational technology, online pedagogy, and operational management.
Reporting directly to the Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs, the Executive Director will undertake:
Strategic Planning and Program Development
Leads the design and implementation of online degree and certificate programs that align with SAIS?s mission and meet global market demands.
Conducts needs assessments, sets program objectives, and ensures the curriculum reflects current topics in global affairs.
Curriculum Design and Oversight
Collaborates with faculty to develop and refine rigorous, interactive, and multimedia-enhanced online curricula.
Incorporates best practices in online pedagogy to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
Faculty Support and Development
Provides faculty with training and resources to effectively deliver online courses.
Organizes workshops on best practices in online teaching and educational technology.
Student Support and Engagement
Ensures online students have access to robust academic and technical support services, including advising, library resources, and virtual community-building activities.
Quality Assurance and Accreditation
Establishes and maintains policies to ensure high standards in online education.
Ensures compliance with institutional and accreditation requirements.
Technology Integration and Innovation
Leads efforts to integrate emerging educational technologies and digital tools to enhance the online learning experience.
Budget and Resource Management
Oversees budgets, resources, and staffing to support the growth and sustainability of online education programs.
Data Analysis and Program Evaluation
Analyzes program performance, student outcomes, and enrollment trends to identify areas for improvement and inform strategic decisions.
External Partnerships
Builds and maintains partnerships with educational technology providers, universities, and international organizations to expand program reach and impact.
Supervisory Role
Oversees Educational Design and Technology team, direct reports performance management, provide continuous coaching and feedback
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and activities, as well as manage multiple and competing priorities under tight deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to set priorities, analyze data, and think strategically and systematically.

Minimum Qualifications
Master?s Degree.
Six to ten years of progressively responsible management experience in a distance learning or educational technology department.
Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory experience.
Proven leadership in designing and implementing online education strategies, with measurable success.
Experience developing and evaluating training programs for students, faculty, and staff on educational technologies.
Classified Title: Executive Director-ADM Job Posting Title (Working Title): Executive Director, Educational Design and Technology Role/Level/Range: ADMOFF/01/EX Starting Salary Range: $140,000 - $180,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience) Employee group: Full Time Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm Exempt Status: Exempt Location: Hybrid/District of Columbia Department name: Educational Design and Technology Personnel area: SAIS
This salary range does not include all components of the SAIS? compensation program. This position may be eligible for a discretionary retention and performance bonus, based on individual performance and the school?s performance during the applicable fiscal year, as determined by the Dean in their sole discretion. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary slightly from the salary range stated herein.
