Job Summary:
Oberlin College, a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III, invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Athletics Communications and Operations. This role supports the department's mission to foster an inclusive, and enriching environment for student-athletes while promoting Oberlin's excellence in academics and athletics.
The Associate Director will oversee all aspects of athletics communications and game operations for 21 varsity programs. The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and committed to advancing the visibility of Oberlin Athletics through innovative communication, strategies, and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities:
Collaboration and Leadership
Serve as a member of the Athletics Administrative Leadership Team
Work closely with the Director of Athletics and administrative team to develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that support recruitment, retention, and the celebration of stakeholders and community
Lead and manage athletics communications staff and student workers by establishing clear expectations, maintaining high professional standards, and setting achievable deadlines to ensure timely and quality work
Contribute to departmental initiatives and special events
Athletics Communications
Assist in creating, writing, editing, and distributing press releases, game notes, and feature stories
Oversee the production and management of digital content, including video features, game highlights, and graphic designs for social media and the website
Maintain accurate and timely updates of statistics, rosters, schedules, and results on the athletics website
Collaborate with campus partners to ensure alignment with Oberlin's brand standards and institutional messaging
Game Operations
Coordinate logistics and staffing for home athletic contests and special events
Supervise the setup and breakdown of game-day equipment, signage, and technology
Serve as the primary contact for officials, visiting teams, and game-day staff to ensure smooth event execution
Ensure adherence to NCAA and conference policies during competitions
Administrative Tasks
Oversee inventory and ordering of game-day and communications equipment
Assist in managing the department's budget related to communications and operations
Represent the department at campus meetings and conference-level events as needed
Schedule game day workers and photography as needed for internal and external communications
Required qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in communications, journalism, sports management, or a related field
Minimum of three years of experience in athletics communications, sports information, or event management, preferably in a collegiate setting
Proficiency with media software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere), StatCrew/NCAA LiveStats, and website CMS platforms (such as SIDEARM)
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills
Ability to work evenings, weekends, some holidays, and travel as required by athletic events
Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment
Skilled in handling challenging situations with composure, adapting to changing circumstances, and making sound decisions in high-pressure environments.
