The Social Media Manager develops and implements the universitys social media strategy with the goal of enhancing reputation and engagement. This role oversees a robust content calendar, campaign execution and analytics across platforms, manages social media governance and provides thought leadership on best practices. Responsibilities include content creation, monitoring and responding to social activity and coordinating social media issues and crisis management efforts. The manager also collaborates with colleagues and oversees the social media budget to ensure alignment with earned, shared and owned media goals.
Duties/Responsibilities
Social Media Management and Strategy (40%)
Establish, execute, and refine social media strategies and campaigns to elevate brand awareness and foster deeper engagement across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok and YouTube.
Lead organic content planning, optimizing performance across social platforms.
Collaborateonstrategic paid promotional and informational campaigns, including videos, photos, and visual elements, to amplify brand messaging through social media channels.
Monitor, analyze, and interpret data metrics and analytics to measure performance and inform strategic adjustments.
Integrate comprehensive digital accessibility practices into all social media efforts, ensuring compliance with standards such as captioning videos, providing alt text for images, and designing content for inclusivity.
Direct success measurement andoptimization strategies, provide regular reports on campaign performance and iterating for effectiveness.
Develop, overseeand implement a strategic social media content calendar aligned with earned, owned and paid mediaobjectives.
Generate compelling content to enhance social media strategy and drive engagement, including original graphic design.
Curate and produce dynamic campus content through photography and videography, editing as necessary.
Craft and optimizecontent tailored for social media platforms.
Execute strategic content distribution across diverse social and digital channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Google My Business and TikTok.
University-Wide Social Media Governance and Thought Leadership (20%)
Serve as the institution's thought leader on social media strategy.
Lead campus-wide social media governance, advancing policies, updating procedures and sharing best practices.
Providein-depth guidance on accessibility standards for digital and social media, in alignment and support of University compliance efforts.
Provide data driven counsel, spearheading the university's social media content producers' group and training for social media content creators and campus leaders.
Social Listening and Crisis Social Media Management (15%)
Maximize follower engagement and satisfaction, responding to commentary and addressing issues in a timely manner.
Lead social listeningefforts, identifying and tracking trending daily news topics of potential relevance.
Collaborate with communications and media relations colleagues as well as university leadership to recommend response strategies.
Develop protocols and strategies for managing crisis situations on social media platforms.
Monitor social media channels during crisis events and provide timely responses.
Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to develop and implement crisis communication plans.
Evaluate the effectiveness of crisis response strategies and make recommendations for improvement.
Marketing and Executive Communications (10%)
Support digital marketing and advertising processes, providing strategic guidance on social media marketing strategy, including reviewing content.
Advise and collaborate on Presidential social media platform strategy, content and engagement, incorporating accessibility best practices.
Personnel Management (10%)
Direct and manage assigned personnel, including hiring, supervising, and training work-study students, freelance partners, and third-party vendors.
Coach team members to maximize creativity, productivity, service orientation, transparency, and effectiveness.
Budget Management (5%)
Develop and manage the social media budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support various campaigns, promotions, and initiatives.
Monitor spending, optimize budget allocation based on performance metrics, and report on budget utilization to AVP of Strategic Communications.
Required qualifications
Five or more years of experiencedeveloping and implementingsocial media strategy with clear results.
Bachelors degree in marketing, communications, business, new media, journalism or related field.
In-depthknowledge of social media trends, platforms and tools including, including Sprout Social, Facebook Ads Manager, Google Ads, LinkedIn Campaign Manager.
Demonstrated knowledge of digital accessibility practices, including creating accessible content through alt text, captions, and inclusive design standards.
Proficiency in short form writing for social media.
Five or more years of experiencecreating innovative, engaging and shareable branded content across a variety of social media channels for a business, nonprofit, governmental or higher education institution.
Demonstrated success managing a social media calendar with clear process and outcome metrics.
Flexibility to attend events and to monitor University social media accounts outside of traditional business hours, including some nights and weekends, is required.
Exceptional time management skills and interpersonal relations.

Preferred qualifications
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency building relationships and networking with campus stakeholders.
Experience and comfort presenting to groups.
Clear understanding of social media and content marketing theory, including advertising.
Demonstrated understanding of social media management tools like Sprout and Meltwater, and ability to critically evaluate emerging digital platforms for future use by the department.
Experience in developing and executing a social media plan with goals and metrics as demonstrated by application materials.
Familiarity with social media advertising and web publishing.

Salary for Announcement Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $65,000 - $75,000.
This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
