Description To oversee the efficient and safe production and distribution of steam across the university. To manage steam generation equipment, such as boilers and turbines, supervise plant personnel, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and optimize energy consumption.
Essential Accountabilities:
Manages supervisory department operations; plans, implements, and monitors budgets, goals, and objectives within area of responsibility. Manages supervisors and other departmental personnel.
Manages the operation and maintenance of the Enterprise Steam plant and related steam distribution and condensate return systems throughout the campus. Manages the operation and maintenance of multiple de-centralized boiler plants and related steam and hot water distribution and condensate return systems throughout the campus. Manage and coordinate records for all pressure vessels (400+) for proper state (Alabama) regulatory compliance, insurance compliance, and insurance status for all qualifying Campus and Hospital equipment.
Provides engineering technical or management topical instruction, expertise, and problem resolution for department-related activities. Assists in formulation of division strategic long and short-term goals and objectives and their implementation through appropriate policies and procedures.
Develops and implements division-wide initiatives, engineering processes, communications, analysis of Divisional function, and recommendations for process and organizational change.
Coordinates the operation, monitoring, and preventive and corrective maintenance of boilers, pressure vessels, hot water systems, steam piping, underground steam vaults, and other associated equipment to provide continuous utility service to university buildings.
Maintains contact with directors, supervisors, architects, engineers, and others to ensure accomplishment of proper operating levels within central utility facilities. Directs water treatment vendor and oversees campus-wide water treatment program for steam and hot water systems.
Interprets and analyzes blueprints, drawings, floor plans, and schedules related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC systems, equipment, and building structures and finishes. Reviews and evaluates drawings and specifications provided by UAB architects and engineers to support the design and renovation of new and existing facilities.
Assist leadership in interviewing, selecting, promoting, and evaluating applicants, employees, and supervisors for the steam operations department, in alignment with university policies and procedures. Oversees employee corrective actions and addresses employee relations issues as necessary. Prepares special and periodic reports on manpower, budget, personnel, equipment, and other operational data as required. Attends meetings to discuss operational issues and departmental procedures.
Develops preventive maintenance jobs to ensure the work is performed in compliance with the preventive maintenance standards and to ensure that preventive maintenance and University objectives are being met.
Pursues specialized training and certifications to stay abreast of industry changes and to advance expertise.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Starting Annual Pay Range: (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering, or related technical field, and five (5) years of related experience is required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of university business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of steam generation, boilers, pressure vessels, and condensate systems.
Proficiency with control systems (e.g., SCADA, PLCs) used in steam plant management.
Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and ASME standards for steam plants. Experience managing compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Ability to operate personal computer and related software.
Skills in installations and operation of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Variable Frequency Drives (VFD).
Ability to make decisions under time-sensitive deadlines and urgent circumstances.
Strong skills in project management, operations management, and budgets.
Knowledge of business principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
Ability to be flexible, self-motivated, professional, and possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with a collaborative leadership style/mindset. This position requires an individual to possess outstanding written and verbal communication, interpersonal, critical thinking, organizational, assessment and management skills to meet the expected outcomes of the role. The individual must be detail oriented, take initiative and have professional accountability.
Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position in a timely manner to include:
Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 pounds.
Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.
Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
Working within extreme temperature and humidity ranges with a variety of materials.
Working in confined spaces
Work Schedule: 7:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including on-call(subject to change to meet the needs of the University).
