Engineer Manager-Chilled Water Generation & Distribution

Description To oversee the daily operations, maintenance, and management of the university's chilled water plant systems, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of chilled water for campus-wide cooling. To manage the 24/7 operations of the UAB chilled water plant, including advanced controls, equipment, and systems for optimal efficiency.
Essential Accountabilities:
Manages the operation and maintenance of the Enterprise Chill Water Central System plants and multiple De-centralized Chilled Water Central System plants and related chill water distribution and return systems throughout the campus.
Manage departmental operations by overseeing supervisors and staff, planning, implementing, and monitoring budgets, goals, and objectives within the area of responsibility. Ensures effective management of personnel and departmental activities.
Provides engineering technical or management topical instruction, expertise, and problem resolution or department-related activities. Assists in formulation of division strategic long and short-term goals and objectives and their implementation through appropriate policies and procedures.
Develops and implements division-wide initiatives, engineering processes, communications, analysis of Divisional function, and recommendations for process and organizational change.
Coordinates the operation, monitoring, and preventive and corrective maintenance of centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, hot water systems, underground chilled water vaults, and other associated equipment to provide continuous utility service to university buildings.
Maintains contact with directors, supervisors, architects, engineers, and others to ensure accomplishment of proper operating levels within central utility facilities. Directs water treatment vendor and oversees campus-wide water treatment program for chilled water.
Interprets and analyzes blueprints, drawings, floor plans, and schedules related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC systems, equipment, and building structures and finishes. Reviews and evaluates drawings and specifications provided by UAB architects and engineers to support the design and renovation of new and existing facilities.
Assist leadership in interviewing, selecting, promoting, and evaluating applicants, employees, and supervisors for the steam operations department, in alignment with university policies and procedures. Oversees employee corrective actions and addresses employee relations issues as necessary. Prepares special and periodic reports on manpower, budget, personnel, equipment, and other operational data as required. Attends meetings to discuss operational issues and departmental procedures.
Develops preventive maintenance jobs to ensure the work is performed in compliance with the preventive maintenance standards and to ensure that preventive maintenance and University objectives are being met. Maintains safety and health standards to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations and University policies.
Pursues specialized training and certifications to stay abreast of industry changes and to advance expertise.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Starting Annual Pay Range: (Commensurate with experience & qualifications).
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering, or related technical field, and five (5) years of related experience is required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of university business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Advanced understanding of chilled water distribution systems, cooling towers, pumps, and heat exchangers. Experience with automated control systems (e.g., PLC systems, SCADA).
Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices in plant operations.
Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.
Ability to make decisions under time-sensitive deadlines and urgent circumstances.
Strong skills in project management, operations management, and budgets.
Ability to be flexible, self-motivated, professional, and possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with a collaborative leadership style/mindset. This position requires an individual to possess outstanding written and verbal communication, interpersonal, critical thinking, organizational.
Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position in a timely manner to include:
Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 pounds.
Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.
Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
Working within extreme temperature and humidity ranges with a variety of materials.
Working in confined spaces
Work Schedule: 7:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including on-call(subject to change to meet the needs of the University).
