FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Art Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Ceramics to begin in Fall 2025. We seek candidates proficient in a broad range of Ceramics Arts processes and techniques who are prepared to teach ceramics principles, expand current conceptions of ceramics, and challenge conventional art curricula and pedagogies. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision of the school by bringing a perspective, way of thinking and creating, and a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and material approaches in the field of ceramics.
Ceramics is a core area in the Art Department serving students who major in Art and students throughout the College community. The Ceramics Area offers graduate and undergraduate courses utilizing the ceramics facilities which includes electric kilns (Bailey Oval Bell Kiln, new Skutt Kilns, and a Bailey small kiln), Shimpo RK2 wheels, clay mixers (Blue Bird & Blue Bird Pugger Table Top), a Brent slab roller, and one extruder.
The Ceramics Area also seeks to prepare students to think conceptually about art-making and encourages expanded modes of making that could include but are not limited to interdisciplinarity, lived experience, current social movements and contemporary culture.
Core Ceramics faculty responsibilities include:
Teach undergraduate and graduate studio art and seminar classes at all levels; mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Serve as the Ceramics Area Head: create ceramics curriculum and scheduling, train adjunct faculty; manage student workers and/or work study, coordinate supplies budgets; maintain Ceramics facility and equipment.
Serve on departmental and university committees; assist in student recruitment; participate in assessment; contribute to active leadership in departmental governance and administration; participation in the rotation of leadership for the Art Department and the Studio Art programs.
Maintain recognized professional artistic activity and scholarly research; participate in exhibitions and/or presentations of work; engage in field-specific activities.
The Art Department is part of the Division of Humanities & the Arts at City College of New York (CCNY). We have more than 750 undergraduate art majors and minors and we offer Graduate Programs in Studio Art, Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice, Art History & Art Museum Studies, and Art Education. CCNY serves a large population of first generation and historically marginalized students. Our current student population has roots in 153 countries; ninety-nine languages are spoken on campus.
In the Art Department, we aspire to nurture these diverse perspectives within our community of engaged artists, scholars, and educators. As a team, we cultivate innovative art practices, incisive scholarship, and progressive pedagogy. We strive to reimagine our curricula and classroom teaching to better meet the moment and serve the needs of first-generation college students navigating social injustices, psychological consequences of the pandemic, and other relevant issues. Faculty members in the Art Department work collaboratively to make curricular decisions, oversee departmental governance, manage critical administration, and support students as they navigate their collegiate experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in Ceramics, Art, or equivalent and knowledge of a broad range of ceramics techniques. A record of accomplishment in ceramics as demonstrated by exhibitions and projects at venues relevant to the candidate's practice. Proficiency in contemporary art theory and art history. Demonstrated record of teaching learners from a variety of backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
The Art Department is particularly interested in candidates who bring to their teaching practice an understanding of those underrepresented in the arts and concrete ideas about creating just and inclusive learning environments. We are interested in candidates who have a record of at least two years of success teaching ceramics and mentoring students, especially first-generation college students and those from historically marginalized communities. Ideal candidates will demonstrate knowledge of ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in the art world and willingness to engage in departmental discussions to uplift student and alumni experiences in the arts. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience with administrative skills in the arts and/or program management and a history of maintaining a ceramic studio/workshop. We welcome applications from artists with alternative and interdisciplinary practices in ceramics.
CCNY aims to embrace diverse perspectives and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that is working to better support students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or systematically marginalized identities to apply.
