The Department of Art at the University of California, Riverside, invites applications from artists well-versed in contemporary practice across artistic disciplines to join the faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor. The starting date for the position is July 1, 2025.
The department seeks applications from artists whose work provides a rich cultural engagement at the forefront of contemporary art using media such as, but not limited to, sculpture, photography, film/video, performance, sound, installation, or evolving materials and technologies. We are looking for an artist with a conceptually driven art practice, an expanded approach to material and media, and a strong record of exhibiting. We seek a colleague with a breadth of knowledge of both contemporary and historical precedents who challenges the limits of existing conventions and who is capable of mentoring students across media and practice.

Faculty positions at the University of California entail research, teaching, and service responsibilities. The successful candidate must demonstrate ability and strong interest in teaching studio-based classes at all undergraduate levels and contribute to diverse approaches in shaping the curriculum. The department serves a diverse student body, and the successful candidate will bring pedagogical approaches to foster an inclusive space for experimentation. In addition, the new faculty member should possess the versatility to teach MFA graduate students in an explorative and open approach to traditional and interdisciplinary media. The position's service roles include mentoring graduate students, participating on departmental and university committees, and sharing the governance of the Department of Art.
The UCR Department of Art is located in the Arts Complex and offers extensive facilities for art production, including spacious painting and drawing studios, state-of-the-art photographic and digital imaging equipment, a full sculpture lab with CNC and 3d printing capacities, and video production equipment, as well as editing stations. Our MFA program is non-media specific. Graduate students are offered generously sized, light-filled studios and competitive funding opportunities. The University is located roughly an hour (60 miles) east of Los Angeles and benefits from access to an internationally acclaimed art community.

Salary ranges for this position are: $103,700-$129,600. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input. Assistant Professors are required to undergo a mandatory 7th-year review for promotion to Associate Professor, although this can occur earlier.
