The Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in the field of African American History beginning August 11, 2025. The salary range for this position is $77,000-80,000. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in History or a related field by date of hire and show potential for professional development as a scholar and teacher, and a commitment to serving UNC Charlotte students of all backgrounds. A research and teaching focus on African American History is required.
We are especially interested in applications from historians doing innovative work in one or more of the following areas: gender, sexuality, LGBTQ+, race, politics, military, law, film, digital history, medicine and health, or foreign policy. Within a 2-2 teaching load, the successful candidate will work to establish a strong scholarly reputation and demonstrate a commitment to collaborative and community-engaged work. They will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate degree programs in History as well as a US History course in the general education program; as well as service to the department, college, university, and the profession. This position will have its home in the History Department. The department employs 30 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. Degree programs include the B.A. in History (approximately 300 students) and the M.A. in History (approximately 50 students).
We offer public and applied history courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and the department’s MA program features a special concentration in Public History. The department also works closely with other departments and programs across the College, including Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Capitalism Studies, International Studies, Religious Studies, Legal Studies, Medical Humanities, Women and Gender Studies, and American Studies. It also houses several journals and professional associations, including the Journal of Urban History, First World War Studies, and French Historical Studies.
