Job Description Summary
Penn AI is seeking a dynamic and innovative director to lead the implementation of the AI Council's strategic vision, working to enhance the visibility and impact of AI initiatives within the university and beyond.

This role will be instrumental in enhancing the visibility and impact of Penn's data science and AI initiatives through the management of programs, communications, events, and partnerships.

Reporting to the Director of Research Programs and Communications in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, the ideal candidate will possess excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills, along with the creativity to generate engaging content. A strong understanding of technology, data science, and AI is essential, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of programs to increase the activity of Penn AI across campus, locally, nationally, and globally.
• Design and execute an annual suite of events, including conferences, panels, and workshops, ensuring high visibility and broad participation.
• Supervise and manage the Program Coordinator.
• Collaborate with the AI Council and other internal and external stakeholders-including faculty, staff, students, industry partners, and alumni-to broaden the initiative's impact.
• Develop and implement communication strategies and oversee the creation of compelling content, including press releases, articles, social media posts, newsletters, and multimedia materials.
• Manage the Exploring New Frontiers in AI at Penn online platform (ai.upenn.edu), enhancing its functionality and content.
• Produce high-quality written materials, reports, and presentations representing PennAI and the University.

*Please note that this is a term position with a target end date of 01/31/2028*

Certifications or Education Required

• A bachelor's degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred, along with 7 - 10 years of experience leading program development, strategic initiatives, and communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Extensive experience in project management and supervision is required.
• Previous experience in higher education, specifically in research, is strongly preferred.

Job-Related Knowledge/Skill

• A sophisticated understanding of trends in AI and data science research, education, and industry, with the ability to communicate these topics effectively with diverse audiences.
• Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated experience in staff management.
• Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Prior experience and proficiency in website management and social media platforms.
• Familiarity with graphic design and collaboration with designers is preferred.
