Candidates must either be board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or eligible to take the Phase II ACVS certification examination in February 2025. Salary and faculty rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The duties of this position have an emphasis toward clinical service responsibilities in all aspects of equine surgery. EMC has a separate emergency & critical care service that covers approximately two-thirds of the hospital’s emergency caseload; therefore, this position has only a limited amount of shared after-hours emergency coverage. The successful candidate will participate in veterinary student experiential learning and intern and resident clinical training. Scholarly activity and participation in collaborative research corresponding to a non-tenure track faculty position will be expected. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to clinical experiential, didactic, laboratory, and small group instruction of DVM students.
Applicants must be committed to excellent patient care, exceptional client service and strong referring veterinarian relationships. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and an enthusiasm for providing the highest standards of patient care. Participation in continuing education and outreach activities that promote the reputation of the EMC is expected.
A demonstrated ability to be innovative, flexible and adaptable in a busy hospital environment is highly desirable. Dedication to a team-oriented, professional and collegial hospital workplace that promotes the principles of equal opportunity and diversity and fosters a positive culture of collaboration and professionalism for all EMC employees is essential.
The EMC is a premier full-service equine hospital in Leesburg, Virginia. As part of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, the EMC offers advanced specialty care, 24-hour emergency and critical care, and an array of diagnostic services for all ages and breeds of horses. Located in Northern Virginia, the EMC is in the heart of the mid-Atlantic region’s horse country, close to an abundant variety of cultural and outdoor activities.
Our faculty includes three surgeons board-certified by ACVS, two of whom are additionally board-certified by ACVSMR and one of whom is additionally board-certified by ACVECC, three ACVIM specialists, one of whom is additionally board-certified by ACVECC, an internal medicine clinical instructor, and one ACVSMR specialist. We train residents in Internal Medicine (2) and Surgery (2), as well as five interns who rotate through the different services.
EMC has a separate emergency & critical care service that covers approximately two-thirds of the hospital’s emergency caseload, allowing other faculty members to focus more fully on their specific areas of specialty interest. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing exceptional, comprehensive and compassionate veterinary care, being a valuable educational resource for referring veterinarians, future veterinarians and clients, and contributing to the advancement of new knowledge through innovative scholarship and clinical discovery. Our caseload of approximately 2,400 cases annually consists of horses of all breeds, ages and disciplines, and involves a diverse mix of surgical and medical cases. We are extremely fortunate to serve conscientious clients and dedicated referring veterinarians.
The clinical activities of the EMC are supported by a 24-stall hospital, a separate sports medicine clinic, ICU stalls for neonates and adults, a separate 7-stall biosafety level 2 isolation unit, 2 OR suites, a comprehensive clinical laboratory, digital radiography and ultrasonography, standing MRI (Hallmarq), computed tomography (Pegaso HD CT), nuclear scintigraphy (MiE), video gastroscopy, a comprehensive regenerative medicine laboratory, an on-site farrier service and a large technical staff including many licensed veterinary technicians.
In January 2024, the Jane and Stephen Hale Equine Performance Evaluation Center opened. It is a 20,000 square foot indoor evaluation complex consisting of three surfaces (dust-free synthetic, poured rubber and asphalt) and containing a 75x130 foot riding area, two 12x130 foot jogging strips and two 50x50 foot lunging areas – all under one roof.
