Overview

Reporting to the Director of Student Affairs, the Assistant Director oversees major initiative(s) in the advising unit as it pertains to undergraduates only. Advises Global Public Health students in the following programs: undergraduate combined majors, 4+1, and some graduate students. Advise on academic programs, providing practical information related to the curriculum and degree progress, as well as administrative aspects of course selection and registration; help students make informed decisions about their academic and professional goals; interpret institutional policies and procedures; facilitate access to university resources and support services when needed through appropriate referrals. Oversee the undergraduate combined major advising structure and streamline the 4+1 process for undergraduate students in partnership with the GPH Admissions Office. The Assistant Director is an active leader and participant in planning activities and events that pertain solely to undergraduate students throughout the year, developing and implementing advising strategies for student retention and success, and building connections with faculty, staff, student, and employer constituents. Partners with the Assistant Director of Graduate Advising in Student Affairs and Wasserman to provide a combination of career advising, employer outreach/relationship management, and workshop(s). Provides a significant link to students transitioning into and throughout their GPH undergraduate experience.

Responsibilities

Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree With concentration or course work in public health, business or public administration, higher education, or related field.

Preferred Education:
Master's Degree Public Health or Higher Education

Required Experience:
5+ years Advising graduate students, planning and implementing special events and programs, working in student services or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Experience:
5+ years Experience in an academic environment or non-profit/arts environment.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Energetic, dedicated, and passionate about academic advising and career development. Ability to take initiative, be creative, and propose, plan, and implement effective new programs. Enthusiasm, passion, sense of humor, collaborative mindset, ability to provide encouraging yet realistic academic and career advice to students, and most importantly, deep commitment to providing the highest quality of academic and career services is crucial. Excellent organizational skills. Demonstrates the ability to communicate information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing at all levels of seniority, both formally and informally. Experience in advising undergraduate students. Excellent oral and written communication skills Commitment to and experience with providing academic and career services to a culturally sensitive and diverse population. Must be able to provide hour-long student appointments per day, in a fast-paced, sometimes high-volume environment. Must have experience and confidence with public speaking and presenting/designing workshops. Strong organizational and project management skills and superior attention to detail, including meeting key deadlines. Demonstrated skill in establishing cooperative working relationships with staff of all levels, faculty, academic personnel, employers, and alumni. Excellent intercultural communication and facilitation skills as well as experience working with diverse student populations required. Experience supervising staff and working both independently and on a team. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to advise and provide solutions to problems. General knowledge and the ability to rapidly acquire additional knowledge of the world of work, including knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, and occupational, career, and employment information sources.


Qualifications

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $85,000.00 to USD $105,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
