We are seeking an inaugural Chief Communications Officer (CCO) who will be a dynamic and strategic leader responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies to enhance the visibility, reputation, and impact of the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation (BCPI) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU). This role is critical to drive effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and public relations efforts to support and advance the Center's mission and strategic goals.
The Center is committed to working with communities that are focused on ending legacies of structural, entrenched racism, and oppression. You must be willing to think about reimagined government, knowledge, and engagement models through the lens of dismantling these legacies.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Strategic Communication Leadership
Develop and oversee implementation of comprehensive communication and content strategies that align with the Center's mission and goals.
Provide visionary leadership to drive communications excellence and innovation.
Direct and manage partnership with communication partners (e.g., PR agency, web vendors) to ensure strategic and coordinated support of the Center.
Directly manage the Center's communications portfolio with relevant leaders within Bloomberg Philanthropies ensuring consistency of messaging, external positioning and releases.
Collaborate with the Executive Director, the Center's senior leadership team, JHU communications leaders, funders and partners to shape the overall strategic direction of the Center.
Public Relations and Media Engagement
Lead all public relations efforts to enhance the center's visibility and reputation.
Build and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers.
Develop and distribute press releases, media kits, and other communication materials.
Messaging and Brand Management
Ensure consistent and compelling messaging across all communication channels.
Oversee the development and maintenance of the Center's brand identity.
Manage the Center's visual and written communications to ensure brand alignment.
Digital and Social Media Strategy
Develop and execute digital and social media strategies to engage with key audiences.
Oversee the creation and management of content for the Center's website, social media platforms, and other digital channels.
Monitor and analyze digital and social media metrics to optimize engagement and reach.
Internal Communications
Develop and implement internal communication strategies to keep staff informed and engaged.
Ensure effective communication across departments and teams within the center.
Foster a culture of open and transparent communication.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, philanthropies, communications leaders across JHU, partners, and community organizations.
Engage with stakeholders to gather insights, feedback, and support for communication initiatives.
Capably represent the Center at internal and external events and forums.
Team Leadership and Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing communications team.
Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that encourages innovation and excellence.
Provide regular feedback and professional development opportunities for team members.
Reporting and Accountability
Develop and implement robust metrics to track communication impact and outcomes.
Prepare regular reports for the Executive Director, key stakeholders, and partners on communication performance and impact.
Ensure transparency and accountability in all communication activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Communication, Marketing or related field.
Eight years related experience.
Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of 15 years of experience in communications and leadership roles, preferably within the business or philanthropy sectors with increasing responsibility.
Proven track record of developing and executing successful communication strategies.
Proven network of communications professionals at established organizations globally.
Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Significant experience in managing and developing high-performing teams.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
