The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University (NYU) invites applications from screenwriters for a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dramatic Writing, a full-time faculty position for a writer and creative pedagogue to commence September 1, 2025. This is a continuing contract/non-tenure track position.
While the focus of the Clinical Assistant Professor in Dramatic Writing will be on episodic television, expertise in a secondary dramatic writing format (film, podcasting, digital media) is encouraged. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach beyond technique, guiding students through the skills and practice of dramatic writing as well as the issues that such work engages.
The candidate?s teaching philosophy should encourage students to understand television as a method of inquiry and as a tool that helps students think about their other areas of study. To that end, the candidate should be comfortable in an interdisciplinary and collaborative setting with faculty from a range of disciplinary fields. Candidates must have the ability to accommodate students of varying skill levels within one class. Although primarily an undergraduate program, the position requires extensive advisement, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as teaching at the MA level.
Full-time faculty teach four courses per year (two in the fall and two in the spring) and serve as a faculty adviser for about 20-25 students. The position is a non-tenure track and renewable contract line, and includes all the rights of full-time faculty within the Gallatin School. A strong track record of innovative teaching across disciplines is required, as well as a proven commitment to service. Candidates are advised that all teaching at Gallatin is done on campus in New York City.
The Gallatin Interdisciplinary Arts Program distinguishes itself as a hybrid of arts practice and scholarly inquiry. Through a combination of coursework, lectures, exhibitions, and performance opportunities, students are immersed in the liberal arts, practice, and in research. Modeled on the artist-scholar philosophy of education, the Program invites students to design concentrations that combine intellectual pursuits and creative work, blending theory, research, and practice.
Founded in 1972, Gallatin is a liberal arts college of 1,600 undergraduate students and 160 graduate students located within the major research University of NYU. Its innovative B.A. and M.A. programs in individualized study encourage students to develop an integrated, interdisciplinary program of study that combines courses taken in the various schools of NYU with independent studies, internships, and Gallatin?s own interdisciplinary seminars, writing courses, and arts workshops. The School emphasizes excellent teaching, top level faculty research, intensive student advising and mentoring, and a unique combination of program flexibility and academic rigor.
