Chinese Rare Books Specialist (Temporary, 12-months)
The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the central coordinating and support organization for a highly regarded cluster of seven independent colleges known as The Claremont Colleges. TCCS, with about 300 staff members, provides exceptional shared services to 9,000 students, and almost 3,600 faculty and staff. TCCS staff work in both student-facing services as well as administrative and operational services. Our numerous departments are located throughout The Claremont Colleges campus in the beautiful city of Claremont, California.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Chinese Rare Books Cataloging Specialist assesses, evaluates, and authenticates rare and unique holdings in the Asian Library's Chinese rare book collections. This position collaborates with the Asian Library cataloging team and the Collections, Metadata, and Resource Sharing (CMRS) division to input essential bibliographic information and metadata into the library's online cataloging system to ensure the materials are discoverable by researchers around the world, with clear access information. Additionally, this role evaluates and makes plans for the physical conservation of the rare and unique materials in the collection, and contributes to Asian Library projects related to East Asian digital humanities and open scholarship.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following are the fundamental duties and responsibilities of this position which the incumbent must be able to perform to fulfill the purpose and requirements of this position.
Cataloging
Perform original cataloging of Chinese rare books with all associated authority work; demonstrating this work to the library cataloging team. Apply and use the Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records In Machine-Readable Form developed by the Research Library Groups Chinese Rare Books Project (RLGCRBP).
Perform original and complex copy cataloging of other Chinese printed materials with all associated authority work. Apply and use the following standards: RDA, AACR2R, MARC-21, LCSH, LC Classification, NACO, BIBCO, and SACO.
Collection Assessment
Evaluate and authenticate Chinese rare books. This involves researching and summarizing the rare books' physical description, textual contents and provenance.
Evaluate, assess, and make conservation plans for rare and unique holdings in the collection. Consult on necessary requirements for those plans.
Demonstrate the significance of the collection to the teaching and research needs of the academic community at the Claremont Colleges.
Digital Scholarship
Observe and contribute to the Asian Library's projects in East Asian digital humanities and digital scholarship. Identify, describe, and create metadata for rare and unique holdings.
Contribute to the Asian Library's collaboration with libraries and institutions located in Asia to publicize and broaden open access to the Asian Library's rare and unique materials.
Other
Train and develop staff in related work.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training:
A bachelor's degree in one of the following subjects: Chinese History, Chinese Literature, or Chinese Studies.
Experience:
Five to seven (5-7) years of work experience with Chinese rare books. Preference for experience in an academic library setting, including working with faculty and students, providing instruction, and promoting collections.
Competencies:
Advanced knowledge and skills in original cataloging of Chinese rare materials, Chinese rare book bibliographic description, collation, standards in copy-specific physical description, provenance identification, and bibliographic concepts necessary to distinguish editions and impressions of a given printed title.
Advanced knowledge of the history of the book in China, Chinese bibliographical tradition, classification, and cataloging practice.
Intermediate knowledge with digital humanities in Chinese Studies.
Native or near native fluency in Chinese. Proficient in classical Chinese.
Preference for reading and writing proficiency in Japanese or Korean.
Basic knowledge of Chinese rare book conservation and preservation.
Basic knowledge of online library systems, RDA, DCRM, AACR2r, LCC, LCSH, and MARC 21 format, as well as other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards.
Able to develop and manage outreach and communications in enhancing awareness of and access to Chinese rare book collections Cataloging skills and knowledge of non-book East Asian rare materials including stone rubbing, manuscript and archival materials.
Demonstrated ability to work productively on a team as well as individually.
Ability and desire to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.
Appreciate and value diverse perspectives and the differences and complexities in backgrounds, cultures, values, and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive work environment.
Preference for basic knowledge of the history of the book in Japan and Korea.
Preference for knowledge of national and international metadata standards and schemes.
Work Schedule: The regular hours for this temporary, full-time, 12-month appointment position are 40 hours per week scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for this. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate degree.
Experience in academic library setting.
Interacting with faculty and students, providing instructions, and promoting collections.
COMPENSATION
Pay: The hourly rate for this position is commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position. The pay for this position is between $35.87 - $ 39.57 per hour.
Benefits: Due to the temporary nature of this position, it is only eligible for the following benefits: California Sick Leave, workers' compensation, disability, Medicare, and social security, subject to the terms and conditions in the plan documents/policies.
