Position description The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is a self-supporting unit within the University of California. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse, complex, and ever-changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course by course contracted basis. This is NOT a faculty position.
Online teaching positions are now available in Healthcare and Public Health Analytics. We are seeking qualified applicants possessing current knowledge and/or teaching experience in Healthcare Analytics, Health Data Acquisition, Analysis and Management, Public Health Informatics, Data Visualization & AI Machine Learning.
Specific Instructor Duties
Develop and/or update course syllabi in consultation with the UCI DCE Engineering, Sciences Programs Director as assigned using approved syllabus template
Prepare and deliver online course materials and learning assessments in the assigned format
Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform
Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies for the course
Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes, and assign grades
Post final student grades to the transcript system by set deadlines
Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with Director as needed
Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice
Participate in required orientations and complete mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Irvine
Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including: Initial training of Canvas learning system; providing bio for website; completing all hiring paperwork; submitting updated quarterly syllabus; and signing quarterly contract.
Develop and maintain curriculum, syllabus, modules, learning practice questions, exams and grading
Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies in the classroom inclusive of both domestic and international student populations
Allow students to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months following the last class session
Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (i.e.: make arrangements for guest speakers, etc.)
Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning
Update materials periodically, and regularly monitor course evaluations in order to make adjustments and improvements to the curriculum

Taught by qualified practitioners, our courses feature practical applications, underlying rationale, and current issues, all of which can be immediately utilized in and applied to our students' work environments.
Part-time, temporary assignments are on an as-needed basis. This is an ONGOING recruitment. We accept part-time instructor applications all year long; when the division has a need to fill, we refer to the 'pool' of applications on file. We are looking specifically for instructors who are qualified to teach the following course(s) as early as Summer quarter (beginning June 2024).
Healthcare Analytics This course will introduce students to health informatics and advanced analytics through core technologies, data analytics (computational and analytical methods), and health information technology to improve patient care outcomes and enhance the health delivery system's performance. The course will focus on health informatics applications within the healthcare and public health landscape. Specific topics will include an overview of the health informatics concept and related terminologies, data standards, security and confidentiality, health information exchanges, population health management, health data analytics, consumer health informatics, emerging health informatics innovations, and other topics related to health informatics. Learning objectives will be achieved using a variety of learning methods, including (lectures, discussion questions, participation, assignments, experiential projects, selected readings from the textbook, peer-reviewed articles, and industry reports) for each learning objective to develop critical core competency skills and to ascertain real-world applications.
Health Data Acquisition, Analysis and Management This course will provide students with an understanding of information generated in the research, delivery, and management of public and private healthcare services and how the information can be used to generate better healthcare outcomes while respecting privacy, regulation, and ethical practices. Additionally, this course will expose students to some of the challenges in connecting disparate data sources for rigorous analysis using best practices and toolsets. The experience of working through these challenges with real data will provide a deeper understanding of our healthcare systems and insights into building confidence in the analysis that can lead to improved public health. Specific topics will include an overview of the healthcare information landscape, how information is used in different healthcare settings, healthcare information standards (such as the ICD standard and its history), healthcare interoperability standards, which enable the sharing of critical healthcare information across providers and settings, ethical considerations in the use and sharing of healthcare information, governance of healthcare information, the architecture of modern healthcare systems, and the practice of obtaining, standardizing, and connecting various and disparate data sources.
Public Health Informatics This course will aim to provide an overview of the definition and importance of public health informatics and its role in public health services. It will address topics related to the use of public health informatics as a structured and deliberate approach to using available organizational data and information for furthering research and knowledge and have an influence in the planning and delivery of key public health services for the population at large.
Data Visualization and AI Machine Learning for Health This course introduces topics on visualization techniques and AI Machine learning tools that are necessary to facilitate the decision-making process to improve healthcare outcomes and support strategic and operational decisions. Students review data basic concepts, principles, methods, design and implementation techniques, and applications of data visualization models and AI applications. Students gain core competency skills in using processed datasets, compatible with creating visualization and AI machine learning tools such as dashboards, executive summaries, and clinical and operational applications to optimize clinical and business outcomes.
Individuals hired to teach these courses must understand that all such agreements with the University are made on a course-by-course basis and that the Instructor will be made no guarantee of continual involvement with the University in any capacity.
Qualifications
Basic
Advanced degree from an accredited institution; Master's degree in related field.
Healthcare, public health, or health informatics backgrounds with experience in one or more of the following (not an exclusive list): health or clinical information systems, health information exchange, health data analytics, clinical workflows, public health informatics, and project management principles
Additional
