The Music Department at Simpson University invites applications for a full-time Assistant/Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands beginning fall 2023. This role will provide energetic, servant leadership over a redesigned bachelor’s degree program that emphasizes, Christian worship arts, digital music technology, and instrumental/vocal ensembles. As Director of Bands, this individual will have the opportunity to provide vision and development for our newly created band ensembles. Additionally, the successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses in music theory, music recording and technology, songwriting, and/or music history. A commitment to faith integration into teaching, scholarship, and service at a Christian liberal arts institution is an essential quality of Simpson University faculty.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide effective administrative leadership over music programming for the school program.
Directs all aspects of the Simpson University bands, including arranging, program development, performance planning, and fundraising.
Develop and recruit for band program that will include pep, concert, jazz, and eventually a marching band.
Organize and conduct effective music ensemble rehearsals.
Provide visionary leadership and coordination for music performances on campus and in the community, including performances at university athletic events.
Prepare and teach courses in music theory, contemporary songwriting, and music history; the ability to teach courses in computer music technology, and studio recording is also desirable.
Conduct private music instruction on individual’s primary instrument(s).
Student academic advising.
An earned doctoral degree in music; master’s degree with 18 or more graduate units in music will also be considered.
Wind, brass, and/or percussion specialist with knowledge of instrumental music, arrangement, and band presentation.
Evidence of excellent band pedagogy and methods.
Experience in recruitment for band and music programs is essential.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Experience teaching music recording and computer music technology, or professional experience in the recording industry is a plus.
Experience working with a diverse student population and a commitment to inclusion and equity.
A personal commitment to Christ and faith integration at a Christian liberal arts institution is essential.
Personal relationship with Jesus, a vibrant Christian faith, and a commitment to Christian community; capable of sharing faith and engaging in conversations about Christ.
