Job Summary The Manager of Distribution Engineering oversees Midwest Energy electric distribution system planning and engineering functions for electric line and substation facilities 34.5kV and below. This position plans, organizes, directs and supervises assigned engineering staff, providing strategic support, project management, technical support and career development assistance. The Manager of Distribution Engineering works closely with other groups within Engineering, Energy Supply and Operations departments to complete construction projects on time and under budget.
Job Duties – Responsibilities - Tasks
Provide technical leadership and expertise for the electric distribution system engineering function to reporting personnel and to other Midwest Energy employees.
Recommend and provide leadership in the implementation of goals and objectives for the Engineering department.
Establish schedules and methods for the completion of design, construction, and system planning projects, utilizing project management principles and tools.
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff involved in electric distribution system planning, design, and construction projects.
Provide overall direction to consultants assisting with electric distribution planning and engineering activities, and ensure the work product is consistent with the needs and goals of the Engineering department and Midwest Energy.
Work with Engineering staff and other departments to ensure the Outage Management System is providing support and analysis tools of benefit to all departments of Midwest Energy. Ensure that outage statistics reporting is consistent with internal information requests, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
Support Geospatial Information System staff in development and utilization of the GIS as it relates to electric distribution systems including coordination between staking, engineering analysis, and GIS systems to ensure accurate modeling of the distribution system.
Support Computer Aided Drafting requirements of the Engineering department and other Company departments through Engineering staff or contractors and consultants as required.
Manage coordination and communication directly with customers for large customer-driven projects including project meetings, solution development, project estimates, contract development and project cost tracking to meet customer requirements and timeline.
Participate in the development and maintenance of Electric Construction Standards and ensure uniform and consistent application of the Electric Construction Standards and Safety Manual in compliance with the National Electric Safety Code and other applicable standards.
Participate in the development of Engineering and corporate goals and business plan objectives. Review goals and business plan periodically to evaluate status and recommend adjustments as needed.
Prepare department budgets and forecasts related to distribution system engineering, planning and construction in conjunction with the development of the Company budget; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for equipment, materials, supplies, and services; monitor and control expenditures.
Develop staffing requirements and provide to the Director of Engineering for consideration as needed.
Keep informed regarding new developments, trends, and best practices in planning and engineering. Recommend changes, initiatives, etc. to management for effective processes and procedures within the Company.
Supervise and manage reporting personnel to include: interview and selection, performance management, employee training and development, corrective action, and termination.
Develop and maintain internal and external working relationships for maximum effectiveness in serving Midwest Energy customers and communities. Ensure communication and exchange of information so as to present a positive corporate image, both internally and externally. Keep management informed of issues that might impact the work environment.
Promote safe working habits and enforce all safety rules and regulations of Midwest Energy, Inc. Lead by example in safety compliance and take corrective action on safety violations, defective equipment, and any other practice that may adversely affect a safe working environment.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Kansas is required or be obtained within two years of hire date.
Minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible experience in the engineering and/or planning services in the electric utility industry.
Possess a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of electrical theory as applied to the planning, design, installation, operation, and maintenance of electric distribution systems.
Must have an understanding of business planning and budgeting methods.
Have a strong working knowledge of computer software and tools used in engineering and planning functions.

Must hold and maintain a valid Kansas Driver’s License.
