Overview
The Collaboration Services Infrastructure Lead (Email Systems Engineer) is a key member of the Enterprise Infrastructure Services team within the central IT department at Princeton University. The Infrastructure Lead will be responsible for the architecture, administration, operation, and support of hybrid collaboration services infrastructure. This role requires strong technical expertise in Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, along with a deep understanding of email routing, security needs, administrative roles, user license assignment, and cloud native service architecture. The Infrastructure Lead will have primary responsibility for the architecture, engineering, and operation of all email routing and email security infrastructure.
The Infrastructure Lead will play a crucial role in automating routine administrative tasks, reducing manual intervention, and improving overall systems reliability. A key part of this roleâ™s responsibilities will be to enhance security monitoring and security measures to ensure the protection of University data and systems.
Responsibilities also include after-hours on-call support as needed or assigned.
The Infrastructure Lead reports to the Senior Manager of Cloud Enablement and Collaboration Infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Understand the email routing and security needs of University systems and users
Design email routing solutions that maximize reliability and security while minimizing support and maintenance efforts
Understand administrative roles required by various stakeholders within the Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace environments
Understand how stakeholders make use of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace apps
Deliver technical designs and architectures that effectively satisfy stated and documented requirements
Lead efforts to design, implement, and maintain robust email infrastructure leveraging cloud services that can handle increasing volumes of email traffic while ensuring high reliability and availability
Lead efforts to improve email security, routing, and delivery with solutions delivered via infrastructure and configuration as code
Develop and maintain administrative scripts that automate email account management, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace license management, and provide self-service functionality
Develop and maintain solutions to streamline routine administrative tasks using cloud native tools
Provide advanced infrastructure troubleshooting assistance, and routinely collaborate with other University departments and OIT teams on operational issues, projects, and other initiatives.
Manage the administration, operation, and support of the Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace tenants, email delivery services, and email security systems
Develop dashboards/ reports as needed to provide operational insight on KPIs
Ensure services and systems are reliably monitored for security and performance on a regular basis
Ensure compliance with asset, change, incident, and problem management processes and policies.
Provide on-call support on a routine schedule; to resolve emergency issues outside normal business hours (a handheld device is provided for this support).
Take prompt action to mitigate risks and restore service when adverse events occur
Support applications and services managed by the Cloud Infrastructure Services team as needed
Maintain design and operations documentation
Maintain and share knowledge of new and developing technologies and industry standards related to email security and collaboration services
Serve as a mentor and help team members develop their technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills
Train Service Desk staff to diagnose and triage common issues
Maintain relevant certifications for global administration of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
Maintain knowledge of evolving email security standards
Maintain knowledge of modern software development best practices
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
7+years of experiencemanaging IT infrastructure
4+ years experiencemanaging email systems
Experience gathering technical requirements and then researching, evaluating, and recommending technical solutions
Experience with implementing cloud native service architecture solutions
Experience administering Microsoft 365 Exchange Online and/or Google GMail
Proven knowledge of email routing protocols; e.g. SMTP
Proven knowledge of and experience in implementing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC email security frameworks
Experience managing Active Directory and LDAP objects and attributes, including creating search filters and generating reports.
Experience creating/enhancing PowerShell scripts to automate repetitive tasks and generate reports
Experience implementing DevSecOps best practices such as automated testing, âœshift left security,â and security as code.
Hands on experience working with Linux and Windows based operating systems; i.e. administration, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, monitoring, and security hardening
Knowledge of and experience implementing security best practices
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience writing and maintaining documentation
Initiative and the ability to work with minimal supervision
Ability to decompose projects into tasks and manage priorities
Education: Bachelorâ™s degree, or equivalent related work experience. An advanced degree in Computer Science or other relevant field will be given special consideration.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with software development lifecycle practices including source code version control and automated deployment pipelines
Experience with Agile project management practices
Skill in leading training sessions and teaching new skills to others
Familiarity with the ITIL service delivery framework, including Incident, Change, and Problem management
Experience with Microsoft 365 and/or Google Workspace license management
