The Infrastructure Engineer collaborates with a team of skilled IT professionals to provide functional, reliable, and secure infrastructure for faculty, staff, and student use. This role includes project management, infrastructure design, prototyping, and routinely evaluating solutions for compatibility with Khoury's infrastructure. Performs various moderately to highly complex tasks required for user and system requirements, responsible for developing infrastructure-related projects, and acts as technical and operational support. The Infrastructure Engineer coordinates directly with the Assistant Director of IT, IT leadership, and staff to align systems and infrastructure projects with the strategic initiatives of the Khoury College of Computer Sciences.
Candidate must have proven problem-solving skills and technical skills, a 'can do' attitude, the ability to work through challenging situations, and be able to interact with customers. Demonstrated continued professional growth and development. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and activities as both a team member and subject matter expert. Must show demonstrated initiative to research new technologies and be able to interact with customers. To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the employee will rarely be required to work outside their regular working hours as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of 4-6 years of IT Infrastructure experience required. Extensive technical knowledge in systems analysis, systems development architecture development, hardware and software support needs, application deployment and desktop support services, storage, networking, and virtualization technologies. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal. Required to relate directly with customers ranging faculty, staff, students, alumni/ae and vendors.
Advanced knowledge/experience in network, storage, virtualization and cluster-related technologies, general system administration knowledge and experience, general computer security knowledge, programming skills related to system administration automation, and excellent communication skills (for user support). Experience in medium to large computing infrastructures, preferably with experience in a research-intensive environment, a plus. Experience working with environments including Linux, Windows, and Mac preferred.
Preferred qualifications:
Technical understanding of network protocols and services including IP, FTP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, NFS, SNMP, BGP, VXLAN.
Experience in network hardening, including firewall device and Cisco ACL management. Network segmentation experience in a medium to large infrastructure.
Experience with a DDI system such as EIP or pfSense a plus.
Experience with current Cisco hardware and Fabric Extender (FEX) Technology familiarity.
Experience with a virtualization stack such as ESXi or xcp-ng preferred.
Experience with current NetApp hardware running clustered Data ONTAP operating system.
Technical understanding in storage technologies as they apply to virtualization. Experience in Netapp, Nimble, and Pure and the underlying ISCSI and NFS technologies they employ are a strong plus.
Participation in the DevOps culture and familiarity with the toolset and approaches (e.g., Infrastructure as Code) a strong plus.
Advanced knowledge/experience in Linux-related technologies, system administration knowledge and experience a plus.
Experience with other common IT tools for monitoring, alerting, analytics, and change management a plus (e.g., Nagios, Puppet, Graphite, Logstash, LibreNMS, Elasticsearch, Grafana.)
Experience in Juniper devices and JunOS is a plus.
Excellent communication skills (for user support), architectural thinking and professional planning.
Able to assess the DevOps code of others and utilize shell scripting. Experience in other languages is a plus: Ruby, Python, PHP, Java, etc.
Comfortable with version control tools like Git
Knowledge of computer system authentication, authorization, and accounting. Experience with LDAP, PAM, AD (Active Directory), and SSO technologies such as Keycloak.
Experience in a research-intensive environment a strong plus.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Infrastructure Administration
Administration of storage environments, including a mix of vendor-supported and OSS-based technologies
Configuration and monitoring of backups for disaster recovery and continuity planning.
Maintaining the lifecycle of Khoury infrastructure, including evaluating, updating, upgrading, and decommissioning servers and services as required.
Administration of cloud environments related to core infrastructure.
Collaborating with team to monitor production services and proactively handling issues.
Collaborate with team in maintaining IDM solutions backed by LDAP technology.
Maintaining wiki-based documentation as required.
Network Administration
Administration and maintenance of Khoury network infrastructure across multiple datacenters.
Management of access rules, network configuration, and firewall rules.
Utilization of on-prem and remote support teams for configuration of network ports on-site and in remote datacenters
Collaborate with central networking team to configure and manage Khoury resources in a shared DDI (dns, dhcp, ipam) system.
Perform or direct others regarding physical server room network wiring and cable management.
Virtualization Administration
Administration of production, classroom, and research virtualization clusters.
Development and support of containerized environments for student and faculty use.
Support faculty, staff, and students in use of Virtualization Infrastructure.
Data Center Administration
Manage and monitor data centers utilized for production and research purposes through a combination of on-prem visits and remote hands when possible.
Collaborate with contacts in central IT to expand Khoury College's footprint into other datacenters for redundancy and space constraint reasons.
Track server hardware in rack management and asset tools.
Maintain disaster recovery and continuity planning with team.
Legacy Support, Migration & Decommissioning
Maintaining small Windows Domain for backwards compatibility and authentication purposes. Migrating from older environments as replacements are built. Decommissioning and dispositioning older hardware. Other assignments as required.
