The University of Michigan Detroit Center is one of the central units reporting to the Office of the Provost. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Engaged Learning, the Detroit Center's mission is to support, facilitate and enable partnerships and collaborations between the University of Michigan and Detroit communities, centered in education, applied learning and/or research endeavors. To that end, The Detroit Center organizes activities that promote awareness and seed collaboration opportunities through virtual and in-person events. In addition, the Center acts as a visible and prominent representative of the University in Detroit.
The Senior Project Manager will report to the Faculty Director of the U-M Detroit Center, and collaborate with the Vice Provost for Engaged Learning or with the Engaged Learning Project Manager on implementing strategic goals of engagement in Detroit. The individual will be responsible for a variety of strategic activities and projects, primarily focused on the city of Detroit. In partnership with the Engaged Learning Project Manager, the position will coordinate projects, initiatives, and strategies that are focused on engaged learning and on expanding the Universities mission in the Detroit Community. Projects, and their focus, are expected to evolve over time. The Senior Project Manager will plan and execute activities, projects, and initiatives led by the Detroit Center that are aligned with the academic mission of the University of Michigan, the Detroit Center and the Vice Provost of Engaged Learning. The Senior Project Manager will serve as the point person for all engagement opportunities within the Detroit Community. Initiative coordination will require management from concept through completion, development of detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, status reports, conduct planning meetings, program data tracking and analysis, and reviewing of project deliverables. The Senior Project Manager will analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of action, and make decisions in consultation with the Faculty Director. Examples of recent initiatives are the Engaged Detroit Workshops (Workshops organized in Detroit on a relevant topic to Detroiters), Faculty Detroit Opportunity Tours (organized visits to Detroit and community partners by U-M faculty), Detroit Presentations of Learning (lightning talks series by students who carried out Detroit-centered projects), etc.
This role is an integral team member of the Detroit Center staff. As such the Senior Project Manager should also assist in daily Detroit Center operations, including events, activities and other center priorities. This position will occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends to accommodate workshops or other events. Work will be full-time in person, with potential options for remote work, depending on the Detroit Center needs.
Project Management: 80%
Lead project design and implementation including community discussions, proposal preparation, media presence and other university sponsored events. Track data related to the participation and activities including employment, grants, recognitions, startup, patents, etc.
Create and maintain databases related to event invitees and attendees by collecting, inputting and analyzing data
Oversee timelines and communications with all members of the project team
Track expenses and manage budget related to each project
Assist in creating proposals to seek additional program funding
Help with the implementation and coordination of VPEL and University strategies in the Detroit Community
Digital Marketing & Communication: 10%
Generate and publish content for social media channels
Manage the website's content, including writing new content, creating new pages and functionality, editing and auditing existing content, and removing outdated content
Oversee the production of the Detroit Center podcast series
Staff Supervision: 10%
Managing the workflow of their employees, creating team schedules and delegating tasks
Assessing the work performance of their employees and identifying areas that need improvement
Ensuring that goals, deadlines and performance standards are met
Training and onboarding new hires to make sure they understand their roles
Bachelor's degree required, and a minimum of five (5) years project management experience. PMP certification preferred.
Experience in working/collaborating with community, government agencies, non-profit, or higher education institutions in the context of project management
Demonstrated experience in leading multiple, multi-phase, concurrent projects from inception to management and completion
Highly organized with an ability to manage resources, budgets, and complex logistics
Experience in higher education, especially in applied learning initiatives
Demonstrated experience in gathering information, analyzing data and problem-solving, both independently and as part of a team
Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and successfully meet deadlines
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Examples of work products will be requested
Ability to self-initiate, work creatively, independently and collaboratively
Experience in preparing communications, documents, materials, and forms for distribution to others
Demonstrated ability to plan and execute all the details of a large-scale production
Prepares written communications and presentations for a variety of audiences including senior leadership. Effectively coordinates and facilitates communication planning and deliverables for projects and initiatives
Assembles project teams, identifies resources and project roles needed, and develops implementation plans and timelines of projects
