Directs, plans, and manages all aspects of the sports medicine program including budget preparation and policy implementations for injury prevention, initial injury management, rehabilitation of injured athletes, medical and mental health referrals, insurance, and to document such activities. Supports the mission and vision of the Athletics Department while creating and maintaining the values and goals of the Sports Medicine unit.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Supervises employees; evaluates staffing needs; assigns and reviews work; establishes timeframes for the completion of tasks; trains and orients new employees; approves and/or disapproves requests for leaves; interviews candidates for employment and recommends for hire; evaluates work performance; receives and responds to grievances; provides assistance with the development of unit work procedures and policies; recommends and provides staff development opportunities; at the discretion of the Athletics Director, provide sport administration/supervision.
Under the medical direction of the Chief Medical Officer, directs, manages, and provides health care services and supervision for all intercollegiate athletic teams.
With the Chief Medical Officer reviews, monitors, and maintains healthcare in compliance with national sports medicine standards of care. This includes advancing healthcare delivery through innovation and creativity.
Coordinates and executes periodic audit of sports medicine services in compliance with NCAA, Horizon League, and all applicable conferences to which YSU is a member institution.
Creates and maintains a collaborative relationship with unit heads and staff members in strength and conditioning, nutrition, equipment, mental health, academics, and compliance.
Develops and implements policy to document and maintain records of injury, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to participation for medical and legal purposes.
Develops, implements, and updates Emergency Action Plan and emergency communication for all campus and local intercollegiate practice and competition venues.
For risk mitigation and improved healthcare, coordinates the administration of physical examinations for current and prospective student-athletes, including try-out, pre-participation, annual, and exit physicals.
Makes medical referrals to health care professions including primary care, orthopedic physician, mental health provider, medical specialists, or subspecialists.
Directs the organization and administration of the athletic training services, and acts as a liaison between contracted medical providers, team physicians, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents regarding medical issues.
With the Chief Medical Officer, directs drug and alcohol education and testing program; refers athletes regarding alcohol/drug use and nutritional considerations to appropriate professionals.
Advises student-athletes/parents of YSU policy for financial/insurance coverage of athletic-related injuries or illnesses and acts as a liaison for the department's student-athlete insurance program.
Manages and monitors 2-year post graduation athletics injury insurance benefit including coverage decision-making and direct student-athlete communication.
Monitors and recommends proper safety conditions of all athletic team practices, conditioning programs, facilities, and equipment to coaches and administrators in collaboration with equipment staff while following NCAA guidelines and consensus best practices.
Applies specific and appropriate best practice techniques to prevent injury or re-injury.
Monitors environmental conditions and makes recommendations regarding the safety of student-athlete participation.
Measures the effectiveness of staffs' clinical practice through various metrics, including but not limited to, patient rated outcome measures, patient satisfaction questionnaires, and functional assessments.
Directs and manages application of durable medical equipment, protective or injury preventing equipment and procedures.
Coordinates and/or completes components of pre-participation screening and physical examinations.
Monitors and maintains athletic training room inventory including evaluation of safety of equipment for liability considerations and recommends purchase of appropriate supplies and equipment.
Maintains the security of medical records regarding HIPPA guidelines.
Assists contracted medical providers in maintaining YSU Sports Medicine facilities under the standards established by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Measures, evaluates, and interprets metrics of sports performance and sports science.
Delivers educational materials to various stakeholders, including but not limited to, student athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators in compliance with NCAA, Horizon League, and all applicable conferences to which YSU is a member institution.
Precepts professional and post-professional education of learners in programs including, but not limited to, athletic training, physical therapy, and medical education.
Advises department regarding purchase of secondary athletic insurance and coordinating submission of appropriate documentation to insurance company.
With Chief Medical Officer, creates and maintains collaborative relationships with outside consultants, including medical subspecialists.
Develops strategic relationships with contracted and non-contracted medical services to provide timely and appropriate diagnostic imaging and laboratory services to student athletes.
Maintains collaborative relationship with on-campus student health center as the primary medical liaison.
Manages and collaborates with Performance Excellence Graduate Assistant in student athlete mental health resources, case management, and education, including participation in Student-Athlete of Concern Team.
Acts as the institution's NCAA Athletics Healthcare Administrator; timely and accurate reporting of medical services and data and participation in national initiatives directed by NCAA.
Collaborates and maintains relationships with staff and healthcare peers in the Horizon League, and all applicable conferences to which YSU is a member institution.
Creates and distributes education on timely and relevant content to student athletes on mental and physical well-being.
Creates and maintains relationships with off-campus mental health providers; collaboration with off-campus facility on drug and alcohol assessment, education, and treatment.
Maintains the unit budget with fiscal responsibility.
Develops and implements policies and procedures to uphold standards of medical care related to learning differences and return to learn protocols embedded in concussion management including collaboration with university accessibility services.
Demonstrates customer service skills, including the ability to use appropriate judgment, independent thinking and creativity when resolving health care issues.
Complies with all NCAA, conference, OSHA, and institutional regulations and policies and procedures and related meetings.
Other Functions and Responsibilities: Complies with BOC, Inc and Ohio OT/PT/AT guidelines for continuing education.
Serves as NCAA resource person and institution's infection control officer.
Drives passenger vans and/or university vehicles for team travels or off-campus home events as directed.
Travels with intercollegiate teams; evening and weekend hours required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Typically, Monday through Friday; some evening and weekend hours required.
Supervision Exercised: Supervision is exercised over staff and student employees.
Reports To: Senior Associate Athletics Director, Integrated Healthcare and Performance
Required Certifications and/or Licensures: BOC, Inc. Certification and Ohio OT/PT/AT License; current certification in CPR and AED; valid driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications: A master's degree in athletic training, exercise science, or a related field; eight years of athletic training or experience in a collegiate athletic health care environment ; demonstrated effectiveness in verbal and written communication.
Preferred Qualifications: Significant experience with supervision and leadership of a health care staff; at least ten years of experience in a collegiate athletic health care environment; experience with secondary insurance billing services vendor.
