Position description
The Boots' lab is hiring a laboratory technician that will be responsible for sample processing and viral quantification for the lab's bee virus system and general laboratory maintenance for the lab's moth virus system. The project focuses on the viral dynamics of honeybees across a range of management styles in comparison to cohabitating native bees to determine disease spillover events and transmission. This position will involve molecular lab techniques to quantify a suite of RNA viruses found in bees and will be based in Berkeley.
Responsibilities: Perform laboratory bench work for molecular research such as RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, quality control cleaning and quantification, droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), and RNA sequencing. Keep track of sample/data organization and management. Training and oversight of undergraduate student researchers who are hired as student assistants or who are conducting independent research in the laboratory. Laboratory management tasks, including reordering and restocking lab disposables for both the bee and moth labs, maintaining lab organization for multiple users, and hazardous waste disposal. 1-2 hours per day of Plodia lab maintenance, primarily including making food media, transferring adult moths into new pots, and cleaning/autoclaving all materials.
Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application) Bachelor's degree, or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start) Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
Preferred qualifications Bachelors of Science, in ecology and evolutionary biology, molecular & cell biology, or related field. Previous experience with sterile molecular laboratory techniques DNA or RNA extractions, PCR, gel electrophoresis, quantification (i.e., qPCR, qubit, nanodrop). Ability to explain principles of molecular techniques to student researchers and troubleshoot procedures. A self-motivated and independent learner that is a communicative and active team member. Demonstrated organizational skills, including recordkeeping in the form of digital laboratory notebooks, and cleanliness.
