Description:
The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University is pleased to invite applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Radio, Podcasting, and Audio Storytelling in the Department of Radio, Television and Film beginning Fall 2024.
The Department of Radio, Television, Film seeks candidates who understand how to tell meaningful stories with sound. The ideal applicant is a curious teacher-practitioner who is an accomplished audio storyteller with a deep background in best audio practices (in-studio production, field, and remote) and audio reporting (short and long-form). Candidates with significant audio storytelling experience, and knowledge of current trends in the industry (podcasting, terrestrial and satellite radio, audio streaming services, new media) are preferred. The candidate should be able to contribute to the growth and development of our audio storytelling area of study within the Radio, Television, Film Department. In the current on-demand listening landscape, the successful candidate should be capable of teaching the foundations of writing for audio mediums, the art of the live interview, feature writing for short-run podcasts or in-depth radio documentaries, as well as the fundamentals of sound engineering. Additional instruction may include pertinent courses in entertainment and sports media. Tenure-track appointees are expected to establish a successful record of academic scholarship and/or industry-related professional output as well as participate in service and committee work for the Department, the School, and the University.
Qualifications:
Terminal degree (or equivalent industry experience).
Prior teaching experience or be prepared to demonstrate energetic and effective teaching ability.
Body of academic work, and/or significant professional credentials.
Professional experience in audio storytelling reflecting excellent digital communication and writing skills.
An understanding and a reimagining of the ethical, economic, and technological challenges facing the changing audio terrain, and an ability to offer innovative approaches to addressing them in an undergraduate curriculum.
